For the last few days my mare has been rubbing her tail on trees, round bale, etc. She was wormed with Quest Plus about 8 weeks ago. What's she doing???

My mares will do that if I don't clean out their bags.  Lots of dirt, oils and gunk can get stuck up in there and it itches.

I've always been told itchy butts and tails are worms or allergies. if she hasn't done it before and she's on a deworming schedule I would guess it's allergies. it is that time of year.

She could have a tick under her tail, in her tail, or between her back legs or up by her teats.

Yes she's still shedding and also has some dry almost bald spots on her back. I blanketed this year and thought maybe it was just from that but now I'm wondering if the two are related...

I would think one of three issues:
a) mare is in heat
b) wormy
c) smegma between teats

Ive seen mares do this when they're in heat. Also not sure where you are located but here at my place in S. MS the Gnats are HORRIBLE! I've noticed when my 2 yr old comes in the barn he will rub his tail head and middle of his mane. Could be sweet itch from bugs.

if everything else is ok then have vet do a scrape of tail area. Ths time of year pinworms are common and they lay eggs out by anus and vulva area and it is a sticky type fluid that is very itchy as well which the horses then rub themselves raw..I have never had issues with this.. but I was boarding my retired mare at a persons place and thought she was getting wonderful care and also added $$ to deworm her.. she apparently was rubbing constantly on anything there was to rub on.. obsessively..well I got back a horse that was hairless on hind and thin and heavy coated.. she was infested with pinworms and eggs..just something to think about..
