I'm probably totally over reacting, but he's my Love Bug and means more to me than anything (except my children obviously).

Story is: my 15 year old gelding is leased to a friend for her 13 year old daughter to 4H on while I'm pregnant (because he's THAT awesome and will do all of her events - see, told you he was special).

Anyways, they are six hours from me, so I can't really visit. But I get DAILY pics and/or videos. He has gotten his hocks injected regularly for the last two years, but THAT IS IT. He's never had a bruise, bump, scrape, or ANYTHING.

And then my vet calls me today after his appointment and says "well, he popped a medial splint on his right front."

I just about had a stroke. Tell me about your popped splint experiences please!! My vet said for them to cold hose and poultice it to get the swelling down and that it shouldn't effect his performance. Has this been your experience? I totally trust them to take care of him and follow the vet's orders - so that's not a concern. But he's my guy, and a popped splint might as well be a compound fracture as far as I'm concerned :(

Splints are pretty minor. Time off, cold hose, maybe magnetic therapy. Horse should be fine.  Might come back with a bump from calcification but that's it

Was it xrayed?

All my popped splints have been fractured splints, so I have had bone marrow injected into the area to speed up healing.

No, it wasn't x-rayed, only palpated. He has to come back out next week to do his hocks because the weather is AWFUL right now, and they don't have a good inside spot to do them. So maybe I'll have him X-ray it then. I saw a picture, it is the smallest of small bumps, that you can only see if you know EXACTLY what you are looking at. Vet said he felt it during the exam before even noticing it visually.

So it wasn't a "HOLY SMOKES WHAT A SPLINT!!" situation at all. :)

My gelding popped splints on both front legs from an accident when he was 3. Never lame, just warm, and they are fairly large and are still there. Have never bothered him.

I noticed my colt has one the other day.. again, not lame, not hot, not bothering him.

so, from my experience. They have been nothing to worry about

Mine all had a tenderness when palpated. If there is no heat or swelling my guess bruised bone, if there is any heat swelling or tenderness then he may have broke it. Your horse is older and doesn't need the splint bone

Vet said when palpated it was tender, but barely "an ear flick" of pain. My friend said they felt it last night when booting him up to ride, decided not to ride because of it, and then obviously waited for the vet today.

Vet says it seems fresh, but he's not lame on it at all, it's just a bump.

I'm more sad that now my horse has a ding. I just want to snuggle him. And maybe I'm overly emotional because I'm pregnant - who knows.

Thanks everyone for talking me down off the six-hour-drive-ledge :)
