Location: the land of dust & sticks | ok guys i need help, my really nice mare (who has super long/ pretty mane/ tail) foaled 2 weeks ago and now baby Bentley is already trying to chew her tail. I am looking for do it yourself ideas to make tail bag or the things you pull the tail through then braid so that i dont have to order one and pay more for shipping than what the product actually costs... i'd rather not have to put stuff in her tail to stop chewing such as soap or hot sauce but i will if it comes down to it. .......any ideas??? |

| I make my own 3 tube braid in tailbags.
I usually try to find something stretchy for material. Can be harder than it sounds. Measure out 30-36 inches (depending on horse height. More is OK!) About 6 or 7 wide. Basically making a rectangle piece of fabric. Fold over once, sew down side of 2 edges to make your seam. Don't sew last 2 inches on both ends. You'll need 1 end to attach to top and 1 end so you can get your fingers in it.
Do that 3 times. Turn them inside out. Attach 3 tubes to a shorter (around 10-12) inch tube that will be the top. Run a 1 inch skinny sliver of fabric through short tube, this will be your tie in. |

Location: Northern CA | I use the braid in tail bags, but I used to use cut up sheets. They worked just as well, just more of a pain to get braided in. I would take an old sheet, cut it about 3 feet by 5 feet, then cut into 3 strips leaving it connected at the top. I then tie the top around the tail right under the tail the bone, seperate the tail into 3 sections, wrap each section with a section of sheet and braid. It takes a little getting used to but once you do it works well.
I have also done the twine and vet wrap trick, though it looks ugly. Fold several peices of twine in half, tie in a knot, cut to length. Braid tail, loop it through the twine and back through itself, then wrap securely with vet wrap. |

I'd imagine a tricot material would work? (swimsuit-ish material?) |

Yes that material works the best, I have used fleece before....but wouldn't recommend it LOL |

Location: Texas | After showing Arabians forever we use old socks! Start inch below tail bone braid down ( braid in a strip of fabric to tie off so you don't use rubber bands that breaks the hair). Tie off. Fold over 3-5 times so it's a small around ball. Put in sock. Make sure tail goes to bottom of sock. Pinch off where braid ball ends usually about 1/2 way up sock. Wrap electrical tape to secure sock on tail. Fold excess sock down like your cuffing it. Wrap electric tape around middle. And your done. IMPORTANT about tails. Make sure you are always 1-2 inches below tail bone. NEVER braid a wet tail or if it gets wet take out of sock and completely dry. I've seen tails rot off bc they were put up wet or horse dunked it in the water bucket and it was left on. Baby horses chew on things. He may decide whatever you bag her tail with is a new toy just for him. GOOD LUCK |

Location: Northern CA | I have also heard that men's spray RightGuard deodorent is a wonderful chew deterant. I have not tried it yet, but it would be safe for hair and skin, sounds like a good idea. |

Location: USA | I had a horse whose mane was to die for, and her tail was pretty darn long too. I used knee high stockings to keep her mane clean and conditioned. I wonder if you could use panty hose or knee high's for the tail? Might be easier than having so sew stuff . . . but I'm kinda lazy like that |

They worked for me! I just cut the end of the hose in two pieces so I could use that to tie it onto the mane. |

Location: North MS | You can go to a dollar tree and get a long back loofah scrubber. Untie the sections, insert tail and rebraid. $1 tail bag. |

This is what I use. They are cheap and pretty simple to make one out of. I just cut the top in 4 sections, braid tail and put down in sock. Then all you have to do is take the 4 strands that are cut and pull through the braid and tie off. |

| We had a donkey that chewed through one of the pretty stretchy ones I bought. I I cut of the leg of one of my son's old pair of jeans, and laced a nylon shoe string through the top. It wasn't the prettiest by any means, but it definitely was durable and did the job. |

Location: Stephenville, TX | Question: How do you keep the three tube type slinky tail braids on? I just bought a new one, separated the tail into 3 sections and pulled through then tied the top around the tail. It lasted about 2 hours. I found it in the dust with poop on it! I guess that's what my horse thinks of wearing leopard print. Thanks in advance for some tips. ETA: I braided it and tied the bottom but the top must have just slid down? Do you tie it to some tail hair or just around the whole tail at the top?
