I have a 6 yr old mare that I bought a while back. We had issues with the first barrel and I fixed them. Honestly can't remember what I did or didn't do. Wondering what's some other opinions on helping her not do this again. I have videos but don't think I can post off my phone. When we come in she's 100 mph and shuts down extremely hard and shoulders/ plows the first barrel. I've tried pushing her , holding her off it but when she's running that hard I CANT. She run in a smooth mouth draw bit. Anything else she's shakes her head and fights. She's a very sensitive mare !
Thanks.

Does she have a clean bill of health? Teeth, Chiro, and vet having looked at hocks, stifles, and SI? That's the place to start

My first thought is of course lameness, because many vets miss a problem.  Normally when a horse drops its shoulder that is the reason.  Bleeders also behave in this manner at times.

My second thought is throw the draw bit in the trash and make her get used to something else.  When someones says something like, my horse only rides in a snaffle, or all I can use is a draw bit.  My first thought is the horse needs to be broke enough to ride in anything..........desensitize them so you can use something that you don't have to pull on so much.  Something that has a little lift.  I have nothing against snaffles or draw bits, I just am not sure people understand that less is not always better.

She rides all day long in any bit very soft I'm the mouth when doing slow work. When it's game time it's a whole different story.

Whats your path like to first? Where's your pocket does she have enfough room to get set and make the turn?
Where are your hands at? Are you reaching way across her neck? I find lots of people do this to hold them off the barrel but it really just gets them diving in harder.

Ive always been told and believe that if you go back 3 strides (or so) from where your issue is your problem is usualy there.

A video would be very helpful for the more knowlagable ladies on here to help you.

It sounds like she is drifting in while she's running to the first.  I'd be doing a lot of counter arcs with her. Bend her nose in, and push her over with your foot.

This is exactly what she's doing starts in the right apt and drifts into it and then runs it over. Making it very hard to pick her up. She's so powerful running to the first. I will be doing counter arces again. Didn't even cross my mind thank u !!

I agree with KMC -- you need to get her used to something with shoulder lifting ability.  Lifting inside rein and keeping inside leg on her will be the only training method that will help.  Now if she has something physical going on then the fix will be obvious when you figure out what's wrong, if something is wrong.

big ditto to that. All of my horses can run in several different bits, and I usually tune them in a different bit than I run them in. I'll tune in a really light bit and run in something a little bigger....such as tune in a Jr Cowhorse and run in a gag bit with a similar mouthpiece but longer shanks.

If you are holding her off with the outside rein you are encouraging her to shoulder in.
