Location: Texas | okay her first time mom skills can use a little work. She's still figuring out the whole letting her nurse business. Had vet come out and try our luck and with some sedation we at least got her standing still. We still have time so vet said leave them be and early AM check on her and if she's still not sure where the teat is we are going to milk and give colostrum. That will still keep us in the window before we have to worry about failure of passive transfer. |

Am I wrong, but doesn't the Passive Transfer decrease rapidly with each passing hour? No way to milk her and get a little in the foal? I know you have 24 hours, but I thought it decreased significantly. |

Location: Texas | it slowly decreases over time but its not until the 12 hour mark that it really starts closing, and 24 hours is when its pretty much closed. |

vet did not want to milk her just yet because he wanted to give the filly a chance to try and nurse on her own, since she's strong and has a good suckle reflex. I am watching the clock though, I am not going to let it get too late before I milk her if I have to. |

Thanks :). I am going to be on top of it. Believe me, I already have an after hours emergency call charged for him to come out at midnight to sedate herβ¦poor guy has a 2 year old and 6 month old daughter. I felt bad :/. But I didn't want to wait any longer to have a vet come out. she did nurse a little bit and we got the mare standing still for her.. so now hopefully they can keep working on that. |

Location: Texas | Good update!!! I left them alone for a few hours and went out to check on them ... Baby got up and nursed really strong and she stood there patiently. Still want to get a SNAP done later but I feel WAY better seeing her nurse!! |

| Congrats on the filly!! And sounds like all will be fine with the nursing part. I've had a couple take over an hour (almost two) to get that first nursing done and they've been fine. A snap test will tell you for sure. |
