Location: The Great West | I have a 3yo that is race bred on top and o\o a mare whos sire has produced NFR rope horses but shes a full 3 this month and only stands 13.2-3. She is proportionally built and has really started to get thicker rather than taller this spring. i know Kay Blanfords Talons Dark Angel was small but how small? I am riding her brother o|o a different mare and he is 16.3 and comming along nicely, but is this little filly worth the time? I think if she gets to 14.0 shell be lucky what do you think? |

Location: New York | I run a mare and a gelding that are both around 14.1. The gelding is super talented and has won local barrel races just cruising through. The mare is solid 1D/2D. I'd give her a shot! |

| Not sure how big Molly Powell's little black horse was that she ran at the finals for several years in the 90's or so, but couldn't have been too big since it was half welsh. |

| I'd still give her a shot. Even if she doesn't make the big girls cut her size would make her perfect for a kid if she has a good mind. I rode a horse that was 13 and 1/2 inch, built like a mack truck in Jr. High. I did everything on him including heading steers. He was tough to beat in small arenas against the adults. I took him to a team roping school (1975) and the instructor couldn't believe how good he was. He finally ask my mom if he could ride him. You could very well have a diamond in the rough!!! |

Location: Montana | After having the mare I have right now, I won't let size (big or small) bother me. She is right about 14 HH, and she can really turn. She may not make a 1d/2d horse (and I don't know she won't, just got her back from a barrel trainer) but she is a fun little ride. You never know. |

Location: Ky | One of the best to ever compete in our area was Carla Kelly's One Cool Cat. He was simply badass. Not only in barrels but he was a consistant 19 second pole horse too. And he didn't knock down barrres or poles. You had to beat that rascal.
He wasn't very big. Carla wouldn't let anyone measure him but she always tried to say he was 14 hands. He wasn't. He might have been 13-3 if you put corks on him. Of course Carla wasn't very big either. She might have weighed 105 after a big meal.
Some of the experts around used to say they didn't like him because he didn't have the speed to cover a mistake. That may have been true? So he just didn't make mistakes.
He was wide though. Strong horse.
Now maybe a bigger rider would not have had the same success? But together they were about as tough as it got. |

| .... Won all the futurities he was in,
pro rodeo riders go to other rodeos when they find out which one he is running at .....
been backup NFR horse for big time riders and two will be sharing him as their primary mount this year (2015) .... NFR rules may make them ride him double and share the winnings ... ??
His mode of running is ... spinaroundthebarrel .... he puts his elbow on the barrel and powers his back legs right around the barrels ....
Sponsors get irritated at him for leaving their names on the barrels on the backside of the barrel and they have to hire people to spin the barrel around so their name will show up in the photos that are taken ... especially on the 2nd barrel ...
His name is TOOTER ... so listen for him to give a good rootatoottoot right before he comes flying into the arena ...
I have not measured him yet .... but I think over the next year he should have a growth spurt and end up around 16.3 and one half ...
So you won't miss TOOTER ... Listen for the announcer to give him his big famous introduction as he comes flying into the arena .....>>>>>>>>>>>>
"A fiery horse with the speed of light, a cloud of dust and a hearty 'Hi-yo, TOOTER .... AWAAAAAY!!!!"

Location: mi | I think it has more to do with how they cover ground then actual size. I had a little mare 14.2 that could turn a barrel and was a blast to run. But she didn't cover a ton of ground with each stride so while she did really well it could be a long run home on a good sized pattern. A friend of mine has a mare the same size or smaller and she is just big strided so when she starts heading for home she is covering some ground and can hang with the best of them. So that is what I go by I watch them move out across the pasture and I want one that is just reaching with those legs no matter how long they actually are. |
