My mare has been clocking about .5 to .7 tenths off her usual times...been going on a long time, maybe 8 months. She had come off of kissing spine surgery, so I wrote it off to that, but she is turning wicked barrels again. She fires in, but gets slower as pattern progresses. I know it's not hocks. Had a blood test pulled 3 months ago, and 2 of the parts that make up the blood were mildly low, so she's on a supplement, something the vet gave me, don't even know the name off hand. She is a hot-natured mare, and gets really, really hot in the alley. Do ya'll think it could be ulcers? Any other ideas? I'm sure open for advice...also, if you think it is ulcers, someone told me to give her 20cc of aloe vera before i run, anybody agree with that?

This EXACT same thing happened to me. To the tee. Went from winning barrel races to running 2D times to running 3D times.... Would run into the pen but by the time we were on the way out we were loping. I am now treating a Deep Digital Flexor Tendon injury, after many months of trial and error. Look at her front feet!

But ulcers are also very possible. Good luck!

Sounds like my mare. Pulled blood and was only slightly anemic. Put her on a blood builder. She just didn't look that great. Shedding out slow, slightly pot-bellied. Wormed several times. Scoped her last week and has grade 2+ ulcers. Now we are treating for those. I think they are a lot of her troubles. Good luck and I hope you get it figured out!
Also might check into bleeding. A sign of that is running out of gas as they run the pattern. I was going to check mine for that before we found the ulcers. So we are fixing them first.

ok, would this make her what I've heard called an occult bleeder? How can they scope for that if horse has not just been run?

That's why I would have her scoped. She could have an infection causing the bleeding. I had one that had a guttoral pouch infection and she bled like yours. If that's not it ask your vet about trying Lasix the next time you run.

I believe this is also what happened to Hotshot and the Steinhoff's several years back. I remember reading the article and it saying that he just went to running 2D times and they knew something was wrong.

No matter how many different opinions you get on here (and you'll get a lot) it's not going to tell you what's wrong with your mare. You need to take her to a performance vet and tell him the problems you are having with her.

Had this happen to two horses throughout my lifetime. TOP 1D horses winning everything and then the next year we were struggling to make it in the 2D. One actually won a 3D saddle. I did blood tests as well and went to many different vets, tried different supplements. I was at wits end.

I was talking to an ex racehorse trainer who had been around the track and barrel business for at least 40+ years. He told me that horses go in spurts. He had horses that would have an off year and then come back again. This is true to me. Both of my horses ended up coming back a year later. One set an arena record and was a tenth off another. The other one consistently placed in the 1D throughout the year. I did change my feeding program, but I do not believe that this was the reason. Also, get a GOOD equine lameness vet. Get them checked over. I know how frustrating it is, keep positive thinking!

If bleeding is ruled out I would look into giving her some b12 or blood builders. My horse started doing this same thing and I tried giving a b12 shot and she went back to be on top. I started her on blood builder that is basically just a boost of vitamins (mostly b vitamins) that you feed for a few days before a run. I have made 3 runs since starting this and she has placed 1st all 3 times. If ya want more info about it pm me. Like I said I would rule out bleeding and/or lameness first and I highly suggest doing this through a very good performance equine vet. Another thing to check for (I know like you need one more thing) is a high suspensory in a hind leg, this will not show up on a lameness exam sometimes.
