Location: East Tennessee but who knows?! | Parasite load. If they have been on a really good worming program, flax seed helps one shed out really nice. Rice bran helps some too. |

How old is it? I agree with these. I had one with cushings and she kept her coat until July. |

| I had one not shed out a few years back. He was on a parasite program and good nutrition. Had blood work done turned out to be a thyroid problem. Started him on thyro-l worked great |

Location: Alabama | I don't want to steal the ops thread but what will show on CBC if there is a thyroid issue? I've got one that isn't shedding out either and over all just isn't blooming. Fecal is clean and he is on a good feed program. Just got blood work back and nothing major is off. Vet said maybe a tiny bit anemic...
Edited because auto correct stinks.

| If they're a little anemic and everything else is fine, I'd have him scoped and checked for ulcers. |

Have your horses been wormed yet this spring? |

Nothing. Thyroid problems are found on a specific blood test to test the thyroid hormones. CBC doesn't include thyroid. Last I check anyway. |

| Hypothyroidism. Can be detected with the T4 blood test. I have two who require Thyro-L year round. |

| My horse was lethargic, his mouth stayed wet and his mane was dang near an afro. His coat was also thick, dull and he just looked terrible. He is now 23yo and running better than ever. |

| Always go with the simple cheap fix first ... WORMS ..... he may be the only one in your group that ate a horse apple in your pasture or at a barrel race that was loaded with eggs ...
Simple worm manure test ...
If yellow green to dark green .. no worming needed .. except spring and first green grass time .....>>>>>>>>>>>>>
If any color of brown to black ... needs a good doubled upped worming ...
(color can dictate blood from worms sucking or worms crapping that changes the manure to a dark color .... )
Worm with something like Exodus for round worms .. a full syringe ...
2 weeks later hit him with a whole tube of ivermectin ....
I would also sneak him a block of alfalfa or some cubes everyday for the next month ..
it makes one shine like new money ...
Good Luck ... |

Not all horses go off of their feed, or are cranky with ulcers.
I have one who never showed any signs of ulcers, and she ended up bleeding out, it took the vet everything to save her, not I have a 10,000 dollar horse, (her vet bills over past 3 years as a result).
I have another who is a chronic ulcer horse, she becomes a little flinchy (very subtle) when it comes to cinching her.
I have one who grinds her teeth when saddling when she has ulcers.
All of mine get wormed 3-4 times a year self serve feed (hay/grass pasture) and have 40 acres to roam about. The only thing I can say about these horses is it is their personality that causes the ulcers, they keep everything bottled up inside, and are constant worriers.
My three never go off of their feed, and are never cranky.
Needless to say I buy quite a bit of Ulcercureotc OTC
