| When using lutalyse to help a mare come into heat, at what part of the cycle should it be given?? Also do they have a normal cycle then? Just wondering because I am planning to do AI. Thanks!!! |

Location: Desert Land | When was she in heat last? You need to make sure she has a CL or the shot will be useless. |

during diestrus, after she has ovulated. it's a prostaglandin that will lyse her corpus luteum and start a new estrous cycle. It is also common to use estrumate, they both do the same thing. |

| I noticed she was in heat April 21th and took her in for an ultrasound. They said it was too late to AI at that point. The stallion i'm breeding too, his owner is going to be up my way this coming weekend. She said if my mare was in heat she would just collect and bring it up herself and we could meet *nice lady hey? So I guess I'm confused...does Lutalyse help them come into heat sooner? That's what I was thinking..I think Im incorrect though. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Location: Texas | I think you are wanting HCG.
Lutalyse is for a horse who has ovulated and you want to stop her cycle where it is at and start over. it takes about a week I believe to get a follicle growing big enough to ovulate.
HCG acts like luteinizing hormone (LH) and will take the dominant most mature follicle on an ovary, and ovulate it within 48-72 hours I believe. But there has to be a follicle for the drug to work on.
but neither will work unless they are at the right stage in the cycle to use. I would haul her to a vet, ultrasound her, and see where she is at in her cycle.

I let my vet handle that. He knows exactly what to do and when. That is your best bet. |

| I have used lutalyse in the middle of their 28 days, my mare ovulated around 4-6 days post injection. |

Location: Texas | a mare's cycle is 21 days, not 28. diestrus is 14 days and estrus is 7 days. If you did lutalyse at 14 days, I could see the horse ovulating soon after, as the CL was about to be luteinized anyway. |

Location: You never know where I will show up...... | If you don't wait at least 5 days post ovulation the shot won't do any good. It can screw things up worse if you just randomly give it and don't know where your mare is at in her cycle. We maintain a recipient herd for embryo transfer here, and we are always synching different mares up at all times for different donor mares. Not every mare responds to prostaglandin (Estrumate/Lutalyse) the same. You can have 10 mares ovulate all on the same day and give them all shots to bring them back in. Some will ovulate 4-5 days post injection while others will wait 12 days. There is no guarantee on when they will respond to prostaglandin. Every mare is different.

Location: Kentucky | You will also need to be prepared on how your mare will react to Lutalyse. I gave this shot to both of my mares last year. I've sworn to never give it again. I don't like how they both reacted. One did ovulate after the shot, the other did not. I will miss out on a breeding/breeding season in order not to give this. |

We generally use Estrumate here, to short cycle mares. It works just as well as Lutalyse, only without the side effects. |
