Location: Somewhere over the rainbow | All of a sudden my 3 year old filly acts like I have touched her with a poker stick in the ear when I try to slide the bridle on. I thought maybe it was being obstinate but she does the same thing when haltering too if I get too close to her ears.
I checked with my farrier to make sure he has not been ear twitching. She has not...
I used to be able to rub all over her head and ears, even inside with no issues. It is both ears.
Last year about this time she did get some warts on her muzzel, I am wondering if there is a chance she has them in her ears this year?
Any suggestions?

Location: Wonderful Wyoming | she may have bumped her head and is sore up there. I had a gelding that smacked his head in the trailer from another horse jerking around in there and he was touchy for awhile. |

Location: Somewhere between raising hell and Amazing Grace | I would look at three things.....bugs....they can leave sores in their ears....ticks....same thing....and lastly your bridle/halter. Check to see if either is fitting close to her ears. It's like you or me wearing an ill fitting pair of glasses, it can hurt our ears :) |

| Those little pain in the butt gnats get in their ears and make sores. I had one that I had to take to the vet to get doctored and it took me two years to get her where I could slip a bridle over her head. I worked with her every day to get to that point. I had to bridle her by unbuckling the headstall and then buckling it on her. |

Location: Somewhere over the rainbow | Thanks a bunch all. I just started riding her and she is sooo fun to ride. I feel back for her. I will get her to the vet and see if he can get in there and get it out. I feel so bad for her, she must be hurting the way she is acting. |

Location: Alabama | Look closely to make sure she doesn't have those little white plaques caused by a fungus. Makes their ears supper touchy. |

Location: 100 miles from Nowhere, AR | Both my babies have had occasional sore ears as 3 year olds. I've wondered if it could be related to their teeth coming in. Very possible it was insect related as well. Regardless, the problem resolved without me doing anything. |

Location: North Dakota | YEARS ago I worked for a vet when I finished high school, we had a horse come in that had started out being touchy around the ears for no reason. The owner thought he was just being jumpy or grouchy and left him in the pasture, he was just a yearling. By the time they realised it was something more the colts ears started rotting. He ended up having both of his ears removed to nothing at all. I don't remember what caused it but it was one of the worst things I have ever seen. I would have your horses ears looked at maybe something is in them, ticks, infection etc..!! |

| Ear mites .. they are so tiny you can't see them ... but you can see the scales and most times little irritated yellow scummy areas inside the ears where they have been boring around ...
Buy some human ear mineral oil to squirt in his ears .... be ready to dodge the spray because he will shake his head ... do this every 3 days for the next week .... no more mite problems ...
The oil smothers the little devils ... |
