Location: Never in one place long | When I got home from work today, the mare I'm training was down, it's kind of a weird arrangement so I don't want to get into details but the owners have not given me permission to call the vet out yet... She doesn't seem to be collicing, stomach is making noise, she is eating, temp is 99.8. She can roll from one ride to the other but doesn't roll repeatedly and doesn't act like she's in pain.... I have called the vet and she said maybe a neurological issue or even COULD be rabies. Just wondering if anyone has any ideas or had a similar incident happen to them before. She said if she doesn't get up within 24 hrs after meds etc then probably a very serious problem. I think after a few hours probably not a good indication.
Had the vet out early this morning, she was down all night and I checked on her every hr. She took her vitals, everything was normal, no broken bones etc. We flipped her again and then after two tries got her up! She was a little stiff and having muscle spasms but walking around, drank some water and is eating hay. The vet thinks she will be just fine! Thanks for all the advice and prayers!!

Location: Oklahoma | Could be so many things. I wouldn't allow rolling, out of concern for causing a torsion if she does have a mild colic going on. Can she not get up at all> What happens when you attempt to get her up? Is there a tree, fence or any indication she may have taken a hard fall and injured her back?
So sorry the owner will not allow vet care right now . . .

Location: ohio-in my own little world with pretty ponies :) | Is there a possibility she could have fallen? I would try and get her up. I wouldn't force her up but try to. Prayers and hugs to you that you can get her help! |

We've tried to get her up but she tries and then just sits back down. It rained a lot here and she could have slipped.. was laying in the mud until we got her to a drier spot. She was wet and shivering a little but now is not since we dried her off. I know it... I have no idea... I looked up symptons for EHV-1 and doesn't look like that fits her scenario at all, plus she hasn't been anywhere to get it. She could have ran into the lean two I guess or the metal corral? doesn't seem sore anywhere though... hard to diagnose... |

Location: Oklahoma | My best guess would be she has injured her back, especially since everything else appears normal. This cannot be easy for you or the mare. Hopes and prayers you are able to help her. |

Location: Oklahoma | A thought . . . does she respond to pain or pressure on her hind legs in her pastern area? Does she have hind end control?
I have only seen a few in the situation this mare is in and none of the three survived.

Location: Texas | Horse needs to be seen by the vet. Any horse that is dropped off here has a contract signed. Vet is called first owner second. That being said I know you said it's a weird deal. Is there anyway you could get their permission now? It could very well still be colic, or a leg injury so she couldn't get up. Or neuro. God forbid rabies. The problem now let's say it's rabies is that you are exposing yourself ( no one wants that shot series painful and a lot of $$) and your horses and any other horses that are there to that. And even if no one else gets it. Your barn is still quarantined for 30 days nothing in or out if ONE animal like a barn cat is not current on rabies vac. ( per animal control) there are several diseases that present with neuro symptoms and you are risking your horses now. What meds did you give and why. How hard did you try to get her up. Not meaning that mean or hateful at all but a lot of people don't get after them enough to MAKE them get up. What's her respiration and CRT Good luck. Sorry you are in this situation.
Edited after I read some of your replies. It sounds neuro or back injury. Horse needs a vet asap

Location: Oklahoma | Very true, Karen. I just dropped my stallion of at a trainer and his contract allows for him to get my horse veterinary care if he deems it necessary or an emergency and is unable to contact me. This would certainly qualify as an emergency. |

Location: Florida.. | agree with above.. call vet out there asap.. if mare cant get up at all. rolling she can twist her gut to so another concern..
vet can bill owner.. if a horse is in distress or injured you have to call vet out there asap. |

Location: ohio-in my own little world with pretty ponies :) | I bet she slipped and fell and hurt her back. It sounds like she might not have hind control? I know it doesn't help now but I would not let another horse on my property without a contract stating call vet first in an emergency. |

Location: Never in one place long | They did give me permission now THANK GOODNESS but I talked to the vet and she said keep her comfortable and fed monitor her for now. :( She's going to come out... I will keep everyone posted. I almost ALWAYS do make them sign a contract but in this case (stupid me) I did not... it was a horse I fostered for a while, she got adopted and I agreed to train her for a month for free... Good advice! |

wobblers, EPM, some viral myeloencephalitis, an injury to the cord, colic..
from what you described she sounds neurological, but that is going out on a limb until the vet can come out and do a neuro exam. |

Location: Oklahoma | The vet is not coming out? There could be some swelling in the spinal cord that an oral dose of DMSO or other anti-inflamatories could help with. At least the owners have come around and are allowing you to give the horse what it needs. Please let us know what happens . . . |

Location: Smack Dab in the Middle | I spoke to DLV just a little bit ago, and the vet was due any minute, and I'm sure she'll update later. Mare was still down this morning, no change from last night really. |
