So my wonderful husband bought me 20 feeder calves today! While we were getting everything ready to unload them, I found two bird chicks close to death but they were still chirping. So of course I picked them up and stuck them in my coat pocket. They are now in a bucket filled with straw and under heat lamp. They are finally dry and warmed up. I have given them some water with a syringe and even cut up a worm to try to give them something to eat................ What can I do to keep these babies alive???? I know you guys can help me!

What can I feed them? What should I do?

Please and thanks!!!

I rescued one last year from the cat that just barely had its pin feathers.  Never thought it would live but had to give it a chance.  Fed it worms.  It got to where whenever it heard someone's voice it would start chirping wildly wanting to eat.  Would open its mouth wide open.   One day when my husband went out to feed it, he opened up the door and off it went...flying into the wild blue yonder..

Chopped up worms dipped in water.  A slice of fruit.  Any insect that wasn't killed by posion.  Mealy (sp) bugs....  Baby birds normally eat every 4 hours so feed them everytime you wake up at night.

Good luck

Thanks guys! They were still alive this morning. One of this is doing really good but the other still seems a little sluggish. But they ate a worm and had a little more water. Hopefully they will still be alive when I get home from work.

maybe try a few drops of sugar water to perk up the one that's not doing so good. There are formulas for home-made bird food (dog food, eggs, apple juice, etc) that can be feed with a syringe. You tube has many videos.
Good luck :)

We have rehabbed lots of babies (and lost some too). My FIL is a vet and told us to use dry cat food, soaked in water. Feed with tweezers. You can also buy meal worms at the pet store when they're a little older. They eat CONSTANTLY...but thankfully not at night.
Hope the little guys make it!
