| Getting a new platinum trailer - trying to figure out if it's better to have the generator on top or below the manger in the storage. It would be easier to reach in the manger compartment, but maybe it is safer on top? Why would I need to reach it easily? Is the safety factor better on top than in the manger compartment? |

Location: Smack Dab in the Middle | Mine is under my saddle rack, which means my saddle rack was raised--and I'm really short, so I don't like that. My hauling buddy's is in her mangers, and I don't like that because you can't tie a horse there if it's running because of the noise and exhaust. My next trailer, I'm going to make sure mine's roof mounted. |

Location: Okla | Top is the preferred location. The generator will run a lot cooler. Under a manger or under saddle rack the air flow is restricted the generator can overheat and shut off. Plus when it's on top, much less chance of CO2 fumes coming into the LQ.

Location: Oklahoma | On the top... opposite of the side your LQ door is on... When I worked for a Platinum dealer we would put them street side on the top and have the fuel tank in the rear tack... Also, put an extra generator switch in the nose by the bed... that way you won't have to get out of bed to turn it on |

Location: Kansas (but Great Lakes member since 1978) | I've heard (but not totally positive about the truth of this) that it's not allowed to put a generator in the body of a trailer any longer. The chance of carbon monoxide fumes getting into your living quarters are much higher. I would definitely put the generator on the roof or carry one and pull it away from your rig when running it. I've carried one in the back of my truck for a long time and unhitching and pulling the truck out from under the trailer makes it a lot safer. My generator has a remote start/stop for it so it's almost as good as having one built on. I have ordered a new trailer with the generator on the roof though.... Can keep the portable one for home if the power goes off. |

| Well, i know a few people who had their generators break and leak hot oil all night. They were on the top . Lets just say a nice paint job and hot oil down the side is not a good combination. |

Location: North Dakota | Mine is in the rear manger and I love it there. Ours is an '02 and could use a tune-up plus we need to replace the batteries on our trailer so it doesn't always fire with the button in the LQ so in the middle of winter or cold rainy dark nights it is nice to not have to climb up on to the top of the trailer to try to start it. |

Location: Indiana | Another benefit to your generator being on top of your trailer is that oil changes or repairs can be made much easier because there is more space. Like everyone else says, runs cooler, and exhaust is not as much of an issue. Congrats on your Platinum! Great choice! |

Location: Roping pen | Our new Outlaw/Hart is in the manger and it has a different vent set up than what they used to use. It has the fresh air coming in from the bottom as always, but they also put in another vent tube bringing fresh air from the manager door.
There are pros/cons of both. Here are a few I can think of..
Roof-Cons-out in the weather more unless have a cover/hay pod, harder to change oil IMO, removal can be more difficult due to height issue, must have an additional fuel pump, all electrical wires have to be longer, raises trailer height, more wind resistance, can be security issue if not a separate cover/lock, roof should have additional support, have to crawl up ladder to check oil or fix minor issues (either start when cold-ex). Pros-have one more manger for storage, can be easier to work on as can get to all 4 sides for major work, and exhaust is not around horses tied to trailer.
Have had both and I like manger.
As far as safer, I have heard of roof, manger, under nose, in pickup box, and on ground generators all causing CO2 problems. For example, we were at an event last summer-next door trailer, parked 30' away was upwind of our trailer with roof mounted gen. running. Our CO2 detector went off after about 30 minutes. Our windows where open and CO2 came in so you never know.
Our local LQ conversion company states that they have a lot more service issues with roof mounted.

Location: Willows, CA | As a former dealer for both 4Star and Platinum I can sure tell you my preference. On top, on the other side of your LQ door. Easier to get to to service, runs cooler, less noise. Under the mangers or tack is great until you need to service it or repair. Put it on top. |

Location: Texas | My 06 Hart came with generator in back manger..at the time really thought it was great! But you cannot tie your horse on that side at the rear due to the exhaust pipe runs out right behind the rear tire.. I do not want my horse to breath the fumes all day long..If I ever purchase another trailer..generator will be on top and will prefer to have a cover.
Edit also to say now that it is a few year old it will run hot so now during the summer time we have to leave the manger door open :(
