| My mare is older (18) this is her first foal since she was 3, but she's not the best of milker and its taking a toll on her! the colt looks good! but I'm having a hard time adding weight to her.
What do you reccomend I do?
Should I give him a bottle to help?
I have her on free choice 2nd cut alfalfa and grass from the little we have this spring so far
Alfalfa cubs, beet pulp, flax oil, as well as Buckeye Gro n' Win and Cadence and free choice mineral.
The colt is also eating some Buckeye Foal starter |

| If she was skinny when she foaled ... it will take a year to put weight back on her ..
Increase her feed ... it is almost impossible to founder a nursing mare and if her weight loss is after foaling ... I would suspect she has a uterus infection or other problems from foaling like a partial retention of the sack .... start some antibiotics and have her ultrasounded .... and a good worming ... |

Location: Four Corners Colorado | I've had really good luck with Ultium Growth for thin mares. You will see a difference in two weeks if you feed the recommended amounts. |

| she looked good before she foaled. vet checked her follicles and everything looks good that way. she was wormed last week. She isnt dealthy skinny by anymeans, but she can use some weight on her.
would it hurt to give the colt a bottle once or twice a day? or once she fattens up she will produce more milk? |

Location: NE Wyoming | Get your foal a creep feeder with his grain and you can add some milk replacer (dry) to that. We've had to do that in the past with older mares and has worked well. The bottle can turn into a mess. Good luck with your mama and baby!!

| More feed for your mare - in the form of protein - alfalfa is great and I would add ultium as well. |

  You just got to get mean and mean it.
Location: Arkansas | Had a mare that would milk down, the vet said "Feed her!" We wound up feeding her 18 lbs of Land O' Lakes Mare and Foal, daily! She was fed four times a day. Morning, noon, evening and 9PM. Cleaned up every bite.
Land O' Lakes was sold to Purina. So, check with out Purina and feed her! |

I was just reading this acatualy. Our one feed place just started to cary thess product. It sounds pretty good, has anybody used it? Maybe the broodmare mix would help your mare out?? |

Folks on-line
