Location: Oklahoma | I just got this horse a few weeks ago and haven't really been able to ride him much due to saddle fit issues, but now that I've been testing a Crown C since Friday we've actually been able to go around the barrels. Please ignore my bouncing around like a sack of potatoes... I've been on a 7.5 year hiatus and just getting back into it! I know we have room for improvement and eventually I'll decide I'm not afraid to run and ride more aggressively, but for now this is as fast we're going and only exhibitioning!
The previous owners had ran him in a tie down and then switched him to a bonnet. I ordered him a bonnet, but it's not arrived yet and out of forgetfulness he's not even been in a noseband. He doesn't offer to throw his head up inside or out of the arena, so the only two days we've worked the barrels I've kept him out of a tiedown. Does he look okay, or does he need one? I've never ran a horse that wasn't ran in one, so I'm not against it. Just curious for some other opinions on his headset when running.

Then try the tie down later and see. My bet is that the tie down won't make any difference. ;-)

Location: Under The Big Sky Of Texas | You seem to be a very quite rider and have good hands, I say he looks like he dont need a tie down with you. So No,, lol.. Maybe the other rider was not such a quite rider and was in his mouth to much and the horse had his head up and she thought he needed one at the time.

Agreed!
My paint a tiedown the difference between crying whole and leaving with a cheque. He made beautiful runs with or without and was not a headshaker or high headed (not what a tiedown is for anyway) it just gave him that bit of help he needed to make money :-D |

Mine likes "balancing" from it, for lack of a batter word. He was patterned in one and it's what he is used to now.
At home I can ride him without one just fine if I choose to do so. |

Location: Pacific Northwest | Doesn't look like he needs one. How does he behave in warm up? THAT is why my mare gets ran with a tie-down haha. She's fine during her run, she's fine to ride, but if she decides to get a bee in her bonnet over something at a race, she'll throw her head away from me and rear and leap, and she doesn't care if she slams into other horses. I run her in a fairly loose (not loose enough to be dangerous, but it's just tight enough that she can't get her head past the point of control) tie-down just to make sure I don't kill anyone. I've started to figure her out though, and have learned what makes her tick and what helps her settle down so eventually I might be able to take it off.
I would ask his owner why she ran him in a tie-down and see what she says. Some people just always run in tie-downs, other people have horrible hands and cause their horse to need a tie-down.

He's pretty level headed (no pun intended! lol) under the saddle. I will try to start entering or least trying to make "competitive" exhibitions and see how he clocks better.
Here is my first time breezing him thru W/ his bonnet and tiedown the second time I rode him (was still trying him out and he had a different bit as well). Maybe it's better for comparing his head set as we were still very new to each other. I really can't tell much difference in his headset, but maybe it needed to be tighter. http://youtu.be/HQbnk51YXPU

Location: Georgia | I think he short strides himself more with one on. I like him better without. He seems to have a good headset without a tie down... Maybe try a few collection exercises or try riding him in a loomis gag during tuning sessions, but IMHO he looks more comfortable without a tie down. Nice horse! |

Also I would find out why they were running him with headgear and go from there, do what Alison said and try him all three ways and see how he clocks if past owners don't produce a really good reason for him wearing one. Some people throw head gear on everything, maybe they are that type of person.
