Alabama has nice beaches at Gulf Shores.  Mississippi is a little better than Louisiana beaches but still not recovered from Katrina.  Gulf Shores is nice tho.

We are in eastern Louisiana, so we go to Mississippi when we want to go to the beach. I think the only other decent option we have is Grand Isle. I have been to Holly Beach, which borders Texas. It was nice the few times I went. Just not much to do, like the beaches in MS. They didn't have the rentals (seadoos, kayaks, etc.) like the beaches in MS. Didn't have the restaurants and attractions right off the beach like MS, either. But, that's been years ago. It's probably different now. The beaches were nice to lay out on or fish or whatever, though.

The Mississippi beaches are fine- the East side is prettier than the West side but that is just my opinion. I had to work the coastal areas earlier this year and the best hotels are on the beach. I stayed at the Holiday Inn or Hilton Inn right on the beach in Biloxi and it was NICE! The waveland area to the West was just not as pretty or maybe it was because the businesses haven't recovered over there as well.

I suggest taking a cruise, which will take you to great beaches.  When you factor in all your food & lodging, a cruise is about the cheapest and easiest way to vacation (unless you go camping and eat hot dogs).  The water in the Caribbean (from Cozumel, south) is as blue as "Tidy Bowl" and crystal clear.  You will not find that anywhere in the Gulf of Mexico.  Go to Carnival.com for cruise options.

The beaches here are gross. I guess they're alright if you aren't used to nice clear blue water.  We go to Holly Beach every year, but I never, ever get into the water. There are usually warning signs about swimming in the water here on south west Louisiana beaches. The bacteria levels are very high certain times of the year and several are put into the hospital each summer. If you're immune system is good and you don't have any open wounds, you should be fine, lol. We just go for the awesome fishing. Standing on the beach we pull in as many huge red fish as we can handle.

And for more on the south west LA beaches, ever since hurricane Rita completely wiped out every house on Holly Beach and the surrounding area, there aren't many cabin rentals. There are a few on Holly Beach, but you literally have to book them in January and February for the summer. The other beaches close to here rented up until last year, now they can't because of insurance reasons. And there are no boats, water skis or anything like that to rent. Only other thing to do down there is stay at a fishing lodge and fish. If you want a beach vacation you'll have to go further towards Alabama. We've gone to Gulf Shores in the past and it's beautiful there. Lots of things to do besides fish, lol.
And there aren't any restaurants here either. There's a gas station close to the TX border. If you drive north about 25 minutes, there's a high-priced grocery store. You'll have to drive 40 minutes north of Holly Beach to find a place to eat. Since Rita, nothing has been re-built other than a few houses on the beach, the local school and one gas station.

Thanks for the update (for me). It's been years since I've been there and it sounds like it's gotten way worse!

Have you tried Galveston? Every time there is a hurricane it comes back better. Everything is better in TX. Florida is way better but what a drive!

As a MS native, I'm begging you, please don't use your vacation on a MS beach.. The lodging is great and the casinos are nice but the water is atrocious. If you drive for another hour, you'll be in Gulf Shores, Al where the water is hit-or-miss pretty. OR you could tough out two more hours (from a MS beach) in a vehicle and end up in Pensacola, Fl where I have never seen prettier water on the Gulf Coast. IMHO, Pcola is much prettier than Destin.

As a resident of Pensacola, I agree with the above post.  I used to live in Mobile and only thought we had an ok beach until i moved here.  It's like Destin without all the tourists!
