What have you used, seen the best results with? Any opinions using Foal Lac powder? and did you offer the pellets with it? Also did you give Bene Bac Plus to them at any point? This is a rescue, might be too late situation! I need any ideas to give this little thing a boost!

We had an orphan foal as the mother died. We leased some goats, milked the goats then gave the milk to the colt through a large RC bottle with a lambs nipple on it. Of course empty the RC out. Hence the colt's name was RC. He grew up to be a great rope horse.

I am raising one now on Foal Lac.  The foal was 8 weeks old monday. He is being cut back weekly on the milk replacer now. I started him on a purina weanling feed. He did not care for it much. I started mixing it with some Purina senior and he ate it better.  This foal drank out of a bucket since he was 36 hrs old. KV Equine has been good to order from and has a 40 lb bag.

I didn't use the ben-pac; I used probios and other mare feces.  I also used a good bit of bio-sponge in the beginning for scours and this foal drank more than the recommended amount on the side of the container.

Great info, thank you!

I really don't care what they look like in the beginning; I just want them to live. In reality, the good Lord is in control. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

We raised an orphan last year on Foal-lac...powder then eventually he pellets. He seemed to do good on it. He was 8 days old when we lost his mom. He's a year old now and I can't see any difference in him vs other colts.

I took it as a compliment. I am sorry my writing is not clearer. I don't comment often because of things like this. My comment was meant that I probably didn't do anything different than you; it just works that way sometimes

I raised an orphan filly on Foal Lac. (That is the ONLY milk replacer available in this neck of the woods.) She did great on it. I will say that I was told by someone that raises a lot of orphans to dilute it MORE than the instructions on the bag say. (Which is what i did.) My filly NEVER had scours, no loose stool of any kind. But she did get a little "stopped up" at time or two. When that happened, I added even MORE water to her replacer and it softened her up. I fed mine from a bucket. I've never even heard of Bene Bac Plus.

I've had to raise three rejected foals on a milk replacer. None of mine would accept the Foal Lac formula. I used progressive and unimilk that I got at tractor supply. I will say that the Unimilk is much cheaper and I made sure the formula was mixed with warm water and had a little white Karo syrup in it to make it taste better. I had to dunk their nose in it the first time so they would know it tasted good. Hem the up against the side of the stall with your hip, grab the bucket with the formula in it and go for it. I will also suggest a shallow bucket so they won't be frightened at first. Then as they start drinking get a bigger bucket. I will also suggest to get a formula that has a longer hang time so you can have a life too. Having to feed every couple of hours will take its tole on you. Good luck, just remember you can do this. It's not easy but you can get it done.

I believe I should have stock in Foal Lac.

Everyone recommended Buckeye but there was no one within a one way 5 hour drive that sold it.  Another BB recommended mixing the Foal Lac with goat milk replacer (she said it was sweeter than Foal Lac and helped get them to want to drink it)  so we mixed the milk 2/3 Foal Lac 1/3 goat milk replacer.  I think adding the Purina goat milk replacer really made a big difference.  The filly was 5 days old and she drank from a bucket.  We followed the feeding schedule on the Foal Lac but not the amount we gave the filly (race bred Q horse) at least 1.5 (and maybe closer to 2x) the recommended amount.  The filly never ever would eat the Foal Lac pellets.  It didn't matter what kind of grain or alfalfa I put in it.  Ended up feeding them to our other horses who loved them!

Call me crazy but we fed that filly milk until she was 4-5 months old (don't remember exactly).  The other horses accepted her back into the herd (thats another story) and we would ride the 4 wheeler out into the field carrying her bucket of milk for her to drink!  The entire time she looked like a normal filly who was drinking milk from her dam -  she never got pot bellied, was never smallish and today as a 3 year old is a fat sassy 15.2.

I remember it was not easy getting her to eat grain, even when she was with another horse eating feed.  Last year we had a 3 month old filly that was orphaned when her dam coliced at the repro clinic getting bred back, and the filly was nibbling on her dam's Equine Sr.  So when we got her home we put her on Equine Jr. and she never missed a lick food wise - didn't have to give her milk and she loved that feed.

That is terrible to have it happen twice.  I bought a smaller amount to keep just in case. We live a good 2 1/2 hrs from anywhere that stocks it and to order it in fast way would still take a good 3-5 days so I bought some this spring for just in case...of course we ended up losing a filly instead of the mare, but at least we have some.
