Location: Oklahoma | My daughter is looking at colleges in California. She is wanting to take her horses with her. We would like to get some idea of expenses in the state. What do you pay for shoeing? Hay per bale? Is there reasonable (or any) horse friendly places to rent around the San Luis Obispo area? Any information is welcomed and appreciated.

Common Sense and then some
Location: So. California | Shoeing can run anywhere from $125-150 depending upon the farrier. Hay is expensive, Alfalfa is $18/bale - 125lb bale. Orchard is very expensive $26 bale / 110lb bale. Going rate for board is $300/24 x 24 outside stall, full care. Weather is great and you can ride all year long! |

Alfalfa in Monterey County (next county north of SLO) is 18.95/bale, depending on how much you buy. That's what I paid this month for 30 bales of #1.
I can't remember the break down for shoes, but I have one in a full set and two with fronts only. I write a check for $330.
I've never boarded in SLO county, but I bet it's better than here. I was paying $425/mo for hay only, no turn out, in a covered pile corral, cleaning included, surrounded by crazies lol!! I have my own place now. Ahhhhhh.... |

I'm pretty sure it's a bit less pricey as you get further from the coast. |

| A general visit from most vets you are looking at about $200-$300. Any emergencies about $500+. Yeah...bring your pocketbook. It's truly awesome and I ride 360 days out of the year...but we also pay for it. Don't even get me started on fuel costs! |

Oh yes. Shots and worming for three = $566 this month.
Gas is $4.20 here |

| Yes and no. The further inland you go the cheaper it is as far as rent and horse board...but the further away you get from campus the more you are spending in gas. Cal Poly is great and there are actually a lot of job opportunities for college students there from waitressing to working in the veterinary facilities there. She could help pay for her horse...that's what our kids will have to do if they decide to take theirs. (Our kid is 10...she has a lot of time to save up for it. LOL) |

She won't be able to go far enough and still make it worth the drive. You'd have to go about two hours inland (like Bakersfield) to see even a nominal difference in expenses. |

And that would be reasonable in the California sense. lol! I'm saying this as a Californian who moved to Oklahoma due to the cost of living |

| I'm guessing out of state tuition will be expensive too. |

That was my first thought.
Fresno State is a great University. I know I am going to offend some on here but they have a better agricultural program in a lot of ways. It is in the valley and costs will be lower too.
Also, UC Merced is in the valley and the last I heard they are really trying to get their ag. program as good or better than FSU, SLO, and Davis. They are getting good backing from the ag. community there too.
But I would REALLY look at the out of state tuition part. That is going to gut check you I am sure. |

Location: Oklahoma | If she's planning on college rodeoing in the fall our rodeos are in Quincy and Susanville (back to back weekends). In the spring they're crammed into the month of April with Clovis, Coalinga, Cal Poly and Las Vegas. I rodeo independently for Stan State in Turlock so I'm in the middle but that's another cost coming over from the coast each time. |

Cal Poly is an excellent college and a completed education at that college will be well worth the extra cost! I promise!!! |

| My ranch is in Paso Robles. About 45 minutes from Cal Poly. I college rodeoed for Fresno state myself. If your looking for a place to board, I have tons of room and my shoer is awesome and lives about 3 miles away. PM me if you have any questions. |

| My mare is barefoot, but for a trim I pay 65. Hay is $20-25 per bale, board at my barn is $290 for pastures and $400 for stalls, but that is about as low as it gets here. |

I've been in California all of my life, so I have nothing else to compare to. But in terms of California, down south and inland would be much more reasonably priced.
