| Can we talk about our favorite poultices? I love numotizine and just regular Ice Tight. I feel like for some reason people are using these newer therapies and shying away from poultice. Am I just old school? Maybe there is a time and place for poultice but I love using it. Any hock sores, cuts, or scales heal up and I cool those legs off which seems like a great thing to me but I hardly ever see anyone poulticing after a run. Are we embarrassed to whip out the mud or is it just too much trouble for some folks? |

Location: Midwest | I use poultice. Sore No More is my absolute favorite. I think I have even gotten my friends doing it a bit too. lol
It is a PITA though because it sticks all over your hands. I have the BOT stuff, but I prefer using plain poultice AFTER a run. |

For injuries, I am also stocking THE Nutra wound.
My one mare had surgery in november. As a precaution, we cold hose after every ride and when she is ran, after a cold hose she gets 20 minutes of ice and then she is wrapped in a PHT wrap.
However, everyone else gets Sore No More gel on shoulders and backs and Sore No More Poultice (mud) on legs, hocks and stifles. My horses literally fall asleep when that is going on them. You can watch them relax when it is coming on. They just love it! Totally worth the money.

Location: Phoenix | I like SNM poultice. It's the only one that I've seen REALLY work. Kept my geldings legs tight after being stalled for 10 days when normally he balloons up after 1. TIP: I buy latex gloves at Rite Aid or CVS and keep them in the trailer. Keeps your hands clean!!

Location: 100 miles from Nowhere, AR | I poultice after I run, but I can't seem to remember to put a roll of plastic wrap in the trailer, so it's usually done when I get home. IMO for poultice to work without wrapping, you need to clip their leg hair really short and I hate to do that on pastured horses. |

Location: Texas | I alternate between runners relief and a clay poultice as my go to for pulling swelling out of legs and joints.
On areas I can wrap, I would do poultice, brown paper wetted down, then a now bow and a standing wrap. On areas I can't wrap I just slather it on and braid their tail and hope it stays on long enough.
For runner's relief, I take runners relief mixed with nitrofurazone, then my no bow, then saran wrap over the no bow and a standing wrap. I've also just put runners relief on without wrapping. |

makes sense! I clipped mine last week because her legs were full of lice and she was too hard to keep clean with the crazy mud we have. I guess I'll have to put fly boots on her. I don't like having her legs clipped but her hair was too thick and the lice were having a party in there |

| Not to steal the thread but what do you recommend at a show where you run 2-3 times over the entire day??? You may run at 9am and 6pm. I unboot and typically cold hose but is it still benefical to poultice at the end of the day? If i am not running the following day? Im just trying to learn all the rules, my knowledge with poultice is limited. |

Absolutely, the harder they work, the more it helps to do thier legs up. I like to leave them done up for at least twelve hours, 24 is better.
If it is really late and you have one kid cranky and tired and the other puking, making it a bit hard to tend to your horse, lol, it will still help to do your ponys legs up in the morning. |

I prefer plastic wrap to seal the moisture in. If you're using medicated poultice, the leg will still be cool when you remove the plastic, unlike when you use plastic to sweat them. Some people use cotton under the plastic, I don't. Saran Wrap works better than some of the other brands because it's stiffer and won't twist and wad up on you before you can get it on their leg. |

I just used the Finish line Willow mud, I don't have the name exact for the first time this week. I had one who had lots of fluid in her knee and lower leg from a small cut (she is a princess) it worked really well. I can't wrap her because she takes them off within 5 minutes but still did well. It also washed off easy and felt nice going on. I usually have SNM but was out. |
