My mare gets SUPER hyper before a run so I keep her away from the arena and try my best to keep her calm but then when we get to where we have to go in, she throws a fit and acts hyper. She runs in SUPEr hard to the first but then dies out between barrels and on the way home... especially if it's an indoor arena closed gate..... I've tried kicking, spurs, whipping, smooching and she doesn't pick up the pace.... on the trails she will flat out FLY for miles and not slow up so I know she has it in her... what can I do to get her to maintain her fast speed!?

Ulcers and pain issues could cause one to act this way. Also, some horses will get slower the more you kick, whip, etc. You could just try to hustle with your body and smooch to see if riding quieter helps.

Have you had a vet check her out? Could just be a sign of pain

We had thought that maybe ulcers were what was causing it so I'm giving her stuff for that now and goign to see if it helps and get her chiroed...not sure what to give her before a run though because people have told me giving them ulcer gaurd before a run can make them doggy and I don't need that!

I would not hesitate to give it before a run. Your horse sounds like it is using up all of its energy out back stressing about the run. If your horse is able to relax prior to the run then it should have more energy during the run.

If you suspect ulcers, I would suggest determining the cause. I've found that there is usually a related pain issue. You not only need to treat the ulcers, but also the cause of pain.

Yep, I would scope and pull blood after your next run.  That will rule out bleeding and tying up,  if she is anemic then I would for sure treat for ulcers ASAP.  I have never heard of ulcer meds making them doggy, just makes thier tummy feel better.

Make a run, then have your vet scope her within a day or so after.

Your horse is running her race before she even makes it in the arena, that's some of why she dies out during the run.
I'd make a trip to the vet, check everything people suggested above and have her ovaries checked. My mare would fight the gate bad and her ovaries were hurting her. Got that fixed and she has quit fighting the gate.
Good luck!

I run my horse on UlcerGard. He is way less stressed and clocking much better. We "feel" slower but it is only because he is so much smoother and he is actually striding out and working!

Question for those who give Ulcergard the day of the run, how soon before are you administrating it?

My anxious horses, I warm up then I get off and stay off till I run.

Mine are also vet checked to ensure no pain issues, also my anxious horses, I give omeprazole the day before and the day of competition even if they have no signs of ulcers.

I agree. I have an anxious horse so I warm him up and get off. If I've got another horse at the jackpot, I'll actually warm him up by ponying him. All that he takes is loping a handful of circles each direction prior to our run. Then we head to the arena just a few before our draw so that he doesn't get too worked up.

This horse did have some pain issues that have been taken care of, and he gets omeprazole daily. His personality is just to be anxious and hot so I know not to get on too soon or he'll wear himself out waiting for our turn.

In the race horse world I believe they call this Washing Out...where they use themselves up from nerves or pain or whatever before the race.
Also, just because it makes one doggy, if it is an ulcer, if it is pain, if its mental, it still needs to be treated....I had two bleeding ulcers at a 12 year old, feels like a hole is literally burning thru your stomach. Even though I loved gymnastics, merely heading to practice some days would flare that thing up so badly that mom would have to pull over 3 and 4 times for me to throw up. Now imagine you can't tell someone that your stomach hurts like that...you have 2 options, be a complete hot mess or sull up and try to kill someone. I was the complete hot mess, puking, crying, complaining my stomach hurt AND still begging my mom to take me, LOL!!

If she is sound medically, try breezing her inside the arena. My mare does the same thing and every once in a while I have to breeze her inside the arena so she gets the idea.

Your horse is in pain. Check shoe fit, treat as a bleeder, have chiroed, check saddle fit. If it's not one of these you have something serious going on
