How hot is too hot to run your horse at a day race?
I'm out in California for a month and want to go to a couple of barrel races, but it's 100+ degrees and I'm afraid it will be bad for my horse. And me!
Any opinions? Advice?

I think you have answered your own question. If you think its going to be too much on your horse then it's too hot. JMO.

Give em plenty of water and dont leave the saddle and leg gear on, and they will be just fine.

I think it depends on what your horse is used too. As one poster said you probably answered it already, since you know it best.

If the horse is acclimatized to 100+ degree weather then I would do as Whiteboy says and give lots of water, and don't leave tack on. BUT if your bringing a horse from an area that is maybe only 70-80 (20-25ish) degrees and he's not used to it then I probably wouldn't. It also depends on humidity levels in certain areas IMO too. I only get 100's maybe 1-3 times a year for a day or two so I wouldn't even dream of it my guys are miserable at 90.

I agree it depends on what your horse is used to. We run in the high 90s here a lot. I do local shows & run 6 times a day. Between runs, I loosen the saddle, remove leg gear & hose the horse off & walk them down good. I also make sure they stay in the shade & on really hot days, they have a fan blowing on them at the trailer.

If it's too hot for me, it's too hot for me to run my horses in.

My horse and I have been out here for a month, but the temperatures have been in the 80s........until the last few days. It went from 80s to 105 in a matter of a few days.

It's a dry heat.  Give plenty of water and shade.  Go and have fun!
The hotest months are typically July and August.
