So this is the first horse I've kept the mane long on instead of pulling... I've got it to the length I want but now in the summertime it seems dry and brittle. What do you do to keep long manes soft and luxurious??
As far as my horse- She's on good feed, and Animal Element detox...  the rest of her coat is great, tail isn't too bad either... just the mane. Guess it's the combo of sun and maybe fly sprays drying it out.... but her pasture is about 70% shade.
I really only have the time of bathing/ conditioning 1x a week. And prefer no mane tamers etc as she gets rubbed raw easily. Also she is turned out 24/7... have a barn but she is ulcer prone and does better turned out. Are there any leave in conditioners/moisturizers that work well?? Is excessive brushing good or bad?? Supplements? Does braiding it help?? Have heard if they gets braids stuck on something they can pull out large chunks of hair.

I will buy Infusium leave in treatment for people, put it in a spray bottle and spray it in their manes and tails about every other day.

THIS!: https://www.smartpakequine.com/healthy-haircare-hair-moisturizer-233...

It's awesome!

Flax helps with the condition of new hair growth, but won't do much for the exposed grown out hair. But maybe feeding flax will make the hair stronger from the root? I know my horses have beautiful coats when on flax.

Thanks, I do use their conditioner when I bathe her and love it... just looking for something a little easier for everyday use and protection from the elements!

Shampooing it often will dry it out, instead (as gross and greasy as it is) I like to use MTG, just rub it in and leave it. Brushing is bad, it breaks the hair off, if/when a knot occurs just work it out with your fingers otherwise I leave it alone. I do like to leave mine braided, but if she's going to be turned out you have to rebraid it every day or every other day, otherwise it will do more harm than good.

This is the best product I've found. You rub it in, then finger comb it through, they you can run a brush right through it. It's amazing & leaves it very soft.

JOHNSON & JOHNSON baby oil .. do not buy the generics

Squirt some on your hands and then wipe hands on a small hand towel to leave
a nice oily residue and then wipe in mane and tail hair and brush/comb mane and tail.
Just use enough to make the mane and tail glisten a little bit....

this will also untangle a witches knot by brushing with a stiff brush but you have to wet it down with baby oil to free up the tangle one stroke at a time ...

GOOD LUCK ...

I use and actual hair brush to brush it and use MTG and Pepi World Champion aerosol. I also feed flax to all my horses and they are outdoors all summer and have long wavy "cutter manes" as I call them.

I use the home made recipe pinned at the top in the Horse Home Remedy thread.
I think it's SKMs recipe? Baby oil, hair conditioner and mouth wash.
It's super easy, super cheap and the best Ive found and all my horses have long manes/tails if they stay here long enough.
