Location: Ohio | I am at my wits end. I battled it all spring on one of my horses and now that we have been getting hit with a lot of rain its come back with a vengeance. This spring I tried Sore No More The Sauce, medicated shampoos and topical's for rain rot and fungus, surgical scrubs, and vetericyn but it took dry weather for anything to finally work. Any ideas on what to use now? Poor horse, I know it hurts. I have some MTG but I have never had luck with the stuff and am weary to try it. Opinions? Home remedy's? |

| I had used everything under the sun I could buy over the counter. I finally got a concotion from the vet that got rid of it right away. I know it had DMSO and Dex in it.

| I battled scratches on my mare's white leg for a really long time. It seemed every home remedy and/or store bought concoction only made it more inflamed and infected. The thing that finally worked for me (and still works) are the little tubes of triple antibiotic cream (not ointment) you can get at Walmart or Kroger (for people). The tubes are really small and probably $3 each, so it seems expensive, but they worked! Just keep applying and rubbing in the infected area daily and it will get smaller and smaller. Now I just keep and eye out and if she gets one little spot somewhere I apply. Good luck! |

Location: Where I am happiest | Put Desitin on every day when turned out in the grass. The zinc oxide treats the scratches and creates a barrier from the moisture. The vet gave me a small bottle of stuff that really works and it's called Scratches rx. Although none of us can find it anywhere including him anymore. I looked at the ingredients and it is made mostly of oils. You need to keep them covered and iodine shampoo's only keep the cycle going. You have to keep them soft because they crack and bleed and ooz keeping the scabs growing and the cycle going. Keep it soft.
The recipe most vets use is 1/2 jar furacine,1 large tube neosporin,1 large tube tripe antibiotic cream, 10cc's Dex and 2 tubes desitin.
I tried the old sourkrout wrap. What a pain in the a$$ and it came right back. So no, it didnt work. You will get just as far doing a furicine sweat. What either one does is gets the scabs off which you have to do in order to get the lesions treated and start the healing.

| I used triple antibiotic cream or oitment covered with baby bum cream. I use just the bum cream when it starts getting wet to prevent it. I got stuck with some once and prevention really goes a long way. |

Location: Ohio | Thank you everyone! I will definitely be trying some of these. I know a lot of pink skinned horses battle it but this is on a buckskin with no white and none of my other horses have it so who knows... fingers crossed some of these things will work for us.

Location: rabbit run | I mix the desitin and triple antibiotic together in the palm of my hand smear it all over it. I had it so bad several years ago I almost lost my horse. Now I keep his pasterns and lower legs completely shaved all the time so it can't creep in all that hair and get started before you know it's there. He got a few spots this spring and I picked them off and kept after them with the cream stuff and he is good. Good luck, I feel your pain.

Mix together, spread on the scratches. Next day wipe off the scabs with a dry towel and slather more mix on. Works great!!!

I used this!!! I had two horses with white socks and no matter how I kept them in the spring, they got scratches BAD every spring.
One thing I did different is I also used a spray on antifungal/athletes foot product. Which ever was cheaper.
