Location: East Tennessee but who knows?! | Every year one of my horses gets a really raw belly from the flies and it takes forever to heal up. At our old place, the flies weren't as bad but he did the same thing. We moved last fall and we're surrounded by cattle farms and the flies are horrendous.
Once again, he's got a raw belly. I've been putting Swat on it every evening before turning him out and it doesn't seem to be making a difference. It doesn't help that he often will roll and then scratch his belly afterwards.
I use the swat and then spray him down with fly spray on top of that. The flies are usually swarming again by in the morning. Using a fly sheet isn't an option -- he's turned out with a gelding that has torn other blankets to literal shreds.
What can I use to get this to heal up and keep the flies off? All the sprays I've used -- Farnam and Bronco brands - just don't seem to last through the night.
Do you think garlic & ACV would make a difference as far as making him less desirable to flies?
The flies are mainly out in the pasture, not around the barn as much. We have 10+ acres and a ton of cattle all the way around us so I don't know if the fly predators would make that much of a difference.

Location: stray dump capital of the world | I started using Equispot because of the flies and one of my horses contracted vescular stomatitis. That really seems to keep the flies at bay. For the raw spots on the belly, my farrier swears by preparation H...yup hemorrhoid cream. My husband bought an off brand and it has really done the job. I guess flies don't want to eat on things that humans rub on their butts. Who would have ever thought...lol |

Location: East Tennessee but who knows?! | I've never heard about the preparation H.. I'll have to try that! Our feed stores are out of the Equispot. Someone else had suggested that so I may have to suck it up and order some. |

Location: stray dump capital of the world | The Equispot really seemed to help with the flies. I got mine at Tractor Supply, so if you have one of those near, try there.
As far as the Preparation H, I was really shocked how well it did. It also healed up the scabby areas.

I agree with using Preparation H to heal quickly, or a diaper rash cream. I LOVE Endure and find it outlasts all others.

Location: stray dump capital of the world | I forgot about the diaper rash cream. I used it when I had a colt gelded about 14 years ago. It kept the gnats away really well.  |

How many acres are you covering with the fly predators? Ive used them before with good results but we only had 5 acres at the time and no cattle around us. |

Location: Texas | We have a horse that will get eaten alive in the summer. A few years ago we started adding Bug Check to their feed. It makes a HUGE difference. As long as we feed it, that horse doesn't have a problem. Once we quit feeding it and summer isn't over, the flies will eat him up.
We also started using Fly Predator this summer. Between the two, we don't have much of a problem. But I am a HUGE believer in Bug Check. |

Location: Do I hear Banjos? | I have had good success with the Equi-spot this year and the flies/gnats are really bad with the warm weather and rain we are having. For the wounds/irritation the Desitin type baby rash cream works extremely well. I'm guessing the Prep-H is similar in action and would work just as well on the whole. |
