Location: ohio-in my own little world with pretty ponies :) | I was driving home this evening in serious rain and wind storm! I had to stop on the side of the road at one point bc I couldn't see in front of me....a few miles down the road from us there is a horse farm that has 6 or 8 babies and Momma's...outside at all times! They have a really nice set up there and have a nice barn but these guys are out 24/7. For the last 2 weeks all we've had is storms and continuous rain and it bothers me that those babies and their moms for that matter have to stand out in it( no shelter either)
Just needed to rant I guess lol |

Location: ND | My broodmare, baby, yearling & another mare live in a pasture with no shelter or trees. They're fine in the rain storms. Water & wind won't hurt them. And thruthfully, I want my babies to go through a few storms with their momma's so that they learn to put their tail into the wind & stand quietly without panicking. |

| You should be more concerned about yourself, NEVER pull over to the side of the road, go to the next exit. |

Location: Oklahoma | How did horses survive before shelters? They had a significantly higher mortality rate as natural selection took place. That is not acceptable in a responsible breeding business where so much time and money is invested.
That being said . . . mares and foals that are well cared for with good pasture, hay, and/or feed, will be perfectly fine in a rain storm. They will benefit from it, especially summer storms. The majority of my horses have access to natural shelter from trees as well as stalls, but there are out 99% of the time. |

Location: Cocoa, Florida | I don't bring mine in unless I know there's serious lightening and hail coming. We have had horses get struck by lightening on our 50 acres before, so if I can help it I do bring them in but if I'm not around they have to fend for themselves and hope that they are okay!!! Most of the time they do not mind the rain storms as we have them almost every single afternoon in Florida. |

| The slightest sprinkle and mine come running to be put up. They also come up to be put up during the heat of the day. I think horses should have the option of shelter. Most horses and cows I see will at least seek shelter from sun and weather under trees. |

| Mine all have an option of seeking shelter. Before people came along and fenced them in, they had that option. |

Agreed.
I think a responsible breeder should have shelters in all pastures however or access to treed areas for wind break.
When it rains I always move my horses into the pastures with shelters. |

An old farmer told me his theory...
He said "Horses can tell how long it will rain for and what's comin'. If it's a little rain, they'll run for shelter because they don't want to be wet for nothin'. If it's alot, they're not gonna bother because they'll have to go out in it to eat sooner or later."
lol, made sense to me... Wish I had a sixth sense to know how long the rain would last. |

Location: In The Land of Cotton | Mine are out 24/7. And, they have trees and man made shelter if they want to go in to. Only the goat goes in it.
My opinion is - if more horses were left out 24/7 and in a natural atmosphere, there would be less illness, etc.
To the OP - it is never a good idea to pull over on the shoulder of the road. If you must go slower, at least put on your 4-ways and then exit as soon as you can or sit in a parking lot. |
