Long story short my guy whose 8 years old threw me at a show last year and put me in the hospitable with a serious injury. Ever since the accident hes had lameness issues all around. I think I got one thing figured out something else would pop up. Its now a year and 1 month, I found a lameness specialist to take him to.
I was told he has bone spurs all around the outside of the fetlock joint as well as bone deterioration (no longer smooth) going down the leg to the joint and other small areas. The biggest spurs are coming off of the sesamold bone (?) they look like mickey mouse ears.. The actual fetlock joint itself is in good shape no issues there so injecting joint wont help. His leg has swelling which 2 vets had told me was simply wind puffs. But in reality the swelling is being cause by the spurs.
Surgery is out of the question to try and remove them because they are behind the tendons. The only way to get to them would be to cut it all....
Any sort of competition like career is out of the question. Any sort of bending of the ankle will only inflame the area more. I was given DMSO mixed with Cortisone to apply, see if this helps with his comfort. Right now he is showing signs of discomfort.
Basically I was told the less riding I do the better my chances are at slowing the spurs progression and keeping him "sound". No trotting circles no loping circles. I can try lite trail riding but the vet said at some point if they continue to grow my safety is at risk. Now I have 2 horses I cant really ride and no money for a 3rd. My other one is 30 years old and arthritic. While Im sure most who read this would say "sell him" thats not me. I will not get rid of him so please no suggestions as such. Hes a great horse with a beautiful mind and I would never allow him to end up for meat somewhere or have someone else get hurt if they tried to ride him to hard.
Ive tried researching this and have not find any spur growths like the ones my guy has. Has anyone heard of this or experienced it? Ive been crying for a few days now whenever I think about this whole deal. I worry they wont stop crying and he will no longer be able to walk without pain, hes only 8

Sorry for the super long story I tried to keep it short

What about shockwave?  Hugs to you, horses can be very frustrating sometimes.

Ok first off I want you to know I feel your pain. My first horse that I bought alone at 16 mos old is 5 this year and I found out in April that the reason she steps off of the first barrel is a big ole spur in her left stifle that is catching her cruciate ligaments. I had her injected on the first of April and it helped for about 90 days. Her runs are consistently getting worse again. Vet (lameness Spec) said if the injection lasts less than 6mos then she's got some major cartilage damage and surgery is the only option (5-8k$). I don't have that kind of $$.

Here is what I have looked into:

1. CalDensity: based on calcium and other minerals being balanced causes the body to utilize the calcium better and have strong bones, not spurs. Does not say it will help absorption and I trid contacting the company to ask about it but all the lady did was send me the link to the website where I got the contact info in the first place. $3.62/ day for my mare

2. Equibone: basically same as above but has proof of horses re absorbing bone spurs and redistributing the calcium correctly. Heals and prevents spurs. $3.75/day

3. Equidite: not really sure what's it's based on...the website didn't really say. A friend of mine told me she knows a girl that had awesome luck with this stuff getting rid of spurs in a few horses. $350/month loading dose. $130-200/ month maintenance.

4. Tight Joint Plus: based on reducing inflammation and repairing cartilage. Testimonials on this product did not speak of bone spurs but spoke of being able to quit injections. $1.17/ day

5. Flamoxide by THE: increases lube in joints, reduces swelling, enhances connective tissues. Could not find testimonials on the product but I standby the THE products 100% as my mare is on one already that she will never betaken off of due to the amazing results. My fear with this product is it says nothing about spurs so I don't know if it would help but with my mare obviously having cartilage damage maybe it would help that aspect. $165/mo.

Now, THE is working on a supp specifically for re absorbing bone spurs. They are waiting on results from the test horses before putting it on the market. You can bet I'll be customer #1. I'm currently trying to find something to do for her until then. She is officially semi retired until I figure something out. She will be ridden in straight lines and just be kept in shape. I have yet to break down and fall a part but you can bet it's coming. This mare is my pride and joy. She is sooo good at her job and has the biggest heart ever. I want babies out of her but not at this age :(

I hope this helped. Please let me know if you find anything better.

WOW thank you so much. While I am sure their are others out there that have similar problems I still feel so alone.

Ive had nothing but bad luck after bad luck after bad luck. I worry more than anything that their growth will not stop and I will have no choice but to put him down. I will not let him suffer if that was the case. Right now I want him to be comfortable more than anything

I really like the way that Equibone sounds I will have to look into possible products like this. I just started trying to research this and havent seen anything about products so thank you so much!!

I do have his xrays if anyone was curious

I had thought that too but he said no treatments were possible? Maybe its because if they use the shock wave to break it up they cant retrieve the bone chips as they would be behind the tendon. I had thought of calling again and maybe asking. Their clinic does everything under the sun I had hoped he would tell me something was possible?? A horse on a neighboring farm is actually being treated by shock wave for a hurt tendon so they do have the ability

Welcome :) good luck. I'm sorry. I know it sucks. The majority of the bone spur success stories for squib one was on sesmoids I believe. They have X-rays on their website

Pellet has the glucosamine and msm or chondrotin whatever it was and the powder does not. That's why the powder is cheaper
