Am I really the Weirdo?

I'm sure some of you will remember the rescue racehorse that Turnlane saved last year and then rehomed to me in February. I've had several posts about his progress on the pattern, and I'm excited to say that he is officially a money winner now! My youngest brother Brett has been riding him in a local barrel race series in an effort to decide if Streak is capable of winning the 4-H county fair show next weekend. They've been entering the youth, and after they had a disappointing run the first week, they got 2nd in the 3D at show #2, missed show 3 because Brett was out of town being a 4-H camp counselor, and last night they won the youth 3D. That also pushed them to first in the 3D for the series, which I've heard will win them a belt buckle.

Mom also thinks that Streak and I held on to win the Bonus Race Finals qualifier in the 5D despite missing last night so I could be added money at a rodeo in Iowa. At any rate, I am excited that Brett and Streak had a confidence-building run though I do miss having him on the road as Cliff's hauling buddy. Streak is a great calming influence and he's turning into a pretty good grand entry horse for me.

In other news, Brett has discovered that he and Streak can drag tree limbs across the yard to the brush pile after storms. Before we know it, they may be entering those extreme cowboy race things!

I don't have a video of their run, but Mom said it was the best one they've made to date and they actually beat several of the other kids. These pictures are from the first week of the series - their very first trip through the pattern together.

Thanks! I got official word about an hour ago that Streak and I did win a bonus qualifier so that was pretty cool.
The best part of all this is that we've yet to really send him in there full speed......we are both just cruising through the pattern and letting Streak figure out his footwork mostly on his own......and he's dropping his head to walk out calmly every time.

ETA the link to Streak and I's best run so far. This was two weeks ago. Last week I threw a new bit on him and let's just say we won't use it again lol.

This makes my heart smile. I miss seeing Streakers ears curl like that- he is such a happy happy horse. I am glad he would not let me leave him there that day that I rescued him. Thank you so much for caring for him.

Thank you for rescuing him! If you hadn't done what you did, Streak wouldn't have been happy for very long. Those "before" pictures are downright sad. He is very lucky you found him.
Streak is definitely the happiest horse I've ever been around. So far everyone who has met him has liked him, except the bull rider parked by us last Saturday who was afraid of my two big horses. Little did he know, those two would curl up and snuggle with me if they had the chance. LOL.

Thanks! He is a little thin but we're pouring the grain to him and trying to get him looking even better. I am really missing him this week/weekend because he's my favorite grand entry horse and he's the best calming influence on Clifford.

I doubt that! lol. I try to be light handed but Brett is way better at it than I am. I love having him ride my horses because we find out really quickly how soft they are in the face.

I agree - the before pictures are unbelievable and he is completely 100% a feel good story. He might not ever make a 1D horse but he has stolen my family's hearts and he'll be part of our family forever. We've got other things he can do besides run barrels. Which reminds me, I need to introduce him to horsemanship patterns and the flag race before Saturday! Brett will be riding him at the county fair in at least some of the events and I'll have to ask some friends to swing by and video them for BHW. I'm sure Mom will be taking regular pictures of every class.

I have been gone since Wednesday rodeoing so when I went out to feed this morning I took a couple extra minutes just to love on Streak before heading off to work. He was happy to see me, but more happy to see the feed bucket! LOL.

I wish I had taken better pics of the before. What is hard to tell is the depth perception of his rib cage. You could lay a two litre bottle of soda on top of his ribs cage and it would not roll off, that is how bad thin he was and how deep the drop was from the spine to the ribs. Plus he was infested with lice! But he followed me everywhere BEGGING me to choose him that day. I said if he got on the slant load on the last hole- I would take him- he jumped right on! And I PAID MONEY for him- that is how bad I felt the need to save him. What a sweet sweet sweet fella. THANK YOU RWJ for taking him once I got him healthy.
