My daughters mare got bit on the nose Saturday by a rattle snake. We have never had this happen in the 22 yrs. we have lived here.
Is there anything I need to keep my eye on for side effects?

This happen Saturday? How is she now? I would have worried about her face swelling and her nose closing up so that she cant breathe, vets would put tubes up the horses nose so when they swelled shut they could still breathe.

We took her to the vet Saturday and she is still their. They put tubes up her nose, the swelling was about 3 or 4 times its normal. She is on heavy doses of antibiotics.

Good   Tubes is the great approach  I would leave her at the vet where they can monitor for a few days
The swelling takes time.

Had it happen to a great rodeo horse.  Right on the end of his nose.  He was rideable in about two weeks but it took about six months before his nose stopped changing and healed completely.  The skin on his upper lip/tissue got super hard and tight, to where you couldn't pull his upper lip away to do things like twitch him (he never needed that anyways, just used that for reference).

Your vet will know what's best for your horse, but he/she will be fine!

Did they not giver her anti-venom? Maybe they don't give it to horses because a dog takes about 3 viles and each vile is around $300

My vets dont carry it because of the extreme cost and shelf life

Had a dog get bit last summer. All he got were fluids, prednisone and antibiotics  and he was good to go a few days later. Now my sister got bit a few days after that and she had something like 10 or 12 vials. Don't know why it is different with humans and animals.

My son n law had one bitten about a week ago, On the the right nostril. Started swelling and within 2 hours he was completely closed and had to have a trach.
He is home now, have to wait not on the tracheotomy to heal.
Very scary deal!!

Kinda off topic - but one tip I always remembered from my vet was - if your horse gets bit, as soon as possible, if you can cut about a 10" piece of hose and put it in their nostril.  (If it is a nose bite)  I know it won't always work, but if you live out in the boonies like us and it is 2 hours to a vet, it would help.  I have always told this to my husband and children too.

Sorry to hijack, but it is a useful little tip............................

I have had several. Some were ones we didn't see or get to early and just let them be. One was an old old mare that got bit on the lip. When we found her it was still bleeding it was so fresh. We called the vet and he said to watch her, make sure she could still breath with the swelling. She was here on the family ranch before I got here and was a wild nut. Would have been super dangerous to even mess with her. She swelled up like a moose, but could always breath so we left her alone.

Another was bit on the nose and we found him a day or so after it happened. He never had trouble breathing and by the time we found him, the swelling wasn't too bad. However he was only 2 and every time we handled him after that he was a nut. It kind of fried his brain. He was sent packing.

My stud got bit on the edge of his lip/nose and he swelled bad. Gave him antibiotics and meds for inflammation per the vet. He never needed a tube either. Just watched him. He healed fine and no lasting affects. Might have a pic of him.

Had a 1-2 day old filly get tagged by a rattler just above her coronet on the front foot and we dr'd on her on and off all summer long. Thought we had it beat and she finally had infection get to the bone and we ended up putting her down.

That is all I can remember. We have a ton of prairie rattlers here where I live.

edited I can't find the picture of my stud looking like a moose face

I had a cat bitten on the side of the head and took it to the vet. She did not give anti venom and the cat was fine in a few hours. Vet said without treatment that animals abcess all over from the venom. The dog has been bitten a couple of times by a water moccasin and he was fine without anti venom. Animals are pretty resilient from snakebites. Just do what the vet tells you and I am sure the horse will be fine. Not too pleasant to deal with though.

We had two get bit when I was a kid.  My dad didn't take horses to the vet.  I kept cold compresses on their nose and they lived.......don't recall much else, but one of them was Knotthead's great granny.
