I just received the below message on FB.  I am so taken aback.  This has been discussed here as far as federal government.  Really did not even see this one coming from our local governement.  Apparently it was in a 15 page ordiance that was passed and this part was never really brought to light so this was not questioned.  I will be at the meeting.  Can anyone give me any suggestions as to key points.  I am really shell shocked and not thinking clearly.

Anyone in Union County who owns livestock needs to be at the meeting at the Clemson extension office at 7 pm tonight - county council has passed an ordinance that you have to register every animal you own, get permission to move them from pasture to pasture, notify them when you sell them and also they will come out to your land and tell you how your fences must be and much much more......

While at the moment it is shocking, I would go to the meeting and make sure that I invite anyone and everyone that you can.  Whether they have livestock or not.  I would also call the local farm bureau and their agents and the state farm bureau office.  This is something that must not be over looked.

Over reach by a few leads to control by a few.  Don't let this happen in your neighborhood.

DANG. Where are you located?? This is a little nuts ... I would DEFINITELY get Farm Bureau involved. That is what they do, stick up for livestock owner rights in government situations.

I would also get EVERYONE I knew to go to the meeting - and I do mean EVERYONE. The more people that show interest and voice their opinions the better to help the local government to "make a decision".

Good Luck!

This is happening in Union County, SC. I will be at the meeting to get information. I am encouraging everyone I know to attend. I just feel violated right now. We own horses - no cattle. For over 50 years I have known most of the cattle farmers (that's what we call them here - no ranches - just farms :) in our county - the grandfathers, sons/daughters, and now their children who follow in their footsteps. All of them are hard working respectable people who care for their land and livestock. The horse owners in our county do the same. As with everywhere there are a few who get the free/cheap horse thinking they want one and have no idea how to care for it. Animal control has had no problem in the past stepping in a handling these situations. I am clueless as to what brought this on other than a possible revenue source. News of this is spreading rapidly and those sitting on certain boards and have established relationships with the agencies mentioned here to contact are doing/have done so.

I'm speechless. That is truly terrifying.

I'd get EVERYBODY I know (livestock owner or not) and show up at that meeting. How would they plan to regulate these new policies? Is somebody going to be doing daily flyovers of property to see if stock has been moved? Will they also count your stock daily? This is total nonsense. If this actually passed, I'd pack my stuff and get the hell out of there.

I'd do all this and make sure everyone arrived with every firearm they owned prepared to kill whoever signed this POS bill.

Look into The Right To Farm Act. I don't know if you can somehow make it work in your favor but it might be worth a shot. I know around here the feedlot owners use it all the time as an arguement to protect the way they do business.

I don't thin kit is bogus. Something similar was tried in Texas years back. The agriculture and horse community got together and shot it down. If I remember right PETA and HSUS were somehow involved. It was quite awhile back so I can't remember exactly. I know they were wanting identification on every horse, cow, pig and sheep and wanted to track them that way. The excuse was Mad Cow disease.

This is scary, the rights of people are slowly being stripped away, government wants to control everything... if this gets passed in your county... what is next? Giving away one freedom will only lead to more being stripped away. I pray that everyone shows up and speaks out!

How will they enforce this is another thing to think about.

As mind blowing as this is I promise you this is not bogus.  I wish it were.  I live here.  I have a call in to my county council member and am hoping I hear from him soon.  The person that informed me of this has been my neighbor for her  entire life. Her family has been in the cattle business longer than I have been alive which is 56 years.  Her brother is attending the meeting tonight to represent their interest.

Make sure the horse show people and trail riders know about this. It will greatly affect them too. Here they sure helped us put a stop to the madness.

That is just crazy.
I think I would get an attorney involved.
it would appear to violate civil rights by telling you what you can do with your animals.
I know in municipal government ( that is where I work) there are ordinances enacted that regulates cleanliness of property such as junk and debris, high weeds and junk cars and such. We can also regulate building sizes and types as well as fence types and heights. These have to be voted on by council, posted legally and public hearings conducted.
However, Im not familiar with a county council.
So they may have the authority to regulate your fence types but I highly doubt it would be legal to try and regulate when you sell or move your animals.
In most cities, they regulate the number of animals you may have but nothing saying you have to tell them when you sell or move them.
IMO, this is pretty much a socialist type move.

Exactly my point.... and Texas would be the WORST place in the country to try to float a turd like this..

I would also get a lawyer who specializes in property rights involved. If this truly gets put in place, I could see it negatively impacting property values and increase operating expenses for landowners.

Without the public hearing that was publicly posted for 10 days prior to the meeting they cannot do this.  This sounds like it may actually be the public hearing, if so, go and voice your opposition.  The commissioners will generally have their mind and vote made up prior to the hearing.  If they pass it, replace them with some people that will reverse it.
