Expert Posts: 1611	Does anyone do power packs anymore for horses that are super wormy? Got one in and I'm not sure if I should power pack or just buy some quest. Thoughts?

The kill off creates toxins from the dying worms which can cause colic or founder the horse. The protocol is to dose them with something less powerful a couple of times, then Powerpac to get anything that couldn't be killed after the first rounds of dewormer.

Posts: 11511 Location: 31 lengths farms	My mare was diagnosed about 7 years ago with a blood worm overload...the protocol I was given was a power pac deworming, wait I think it was a week ???and then Quest for 5 days, wait a week and give a dose of Quest Plus. Thank goodness I work for a vet pharmacy supply place or couldn't have afforded to do it.

Expert Posts: 1611	this horse has been wormed with ivermectin (just whatever generic was at the coop) two weeks ago and two weeks b4 that he had a ivermectin/praziquantel but he still tested very positive on a fecal.

I would be VERY cautious building drug levels in the horse's system to the level that 5 doses in a week would do - that would be toxic to most horses. I do not know any colleague who would recommend even dosing twice one week apart. What parasite did the horse still have when the fecal was done? That would tell you which dewormer to choose.
