| To those of you that give reserpine, can you tell me what size dose you are giving and how often? My vet has me giving 1cc every 3 weeks I recently purchased this mare and I was told to keep her on it from the previous owners because she is a bleeder. She is also extremely hyper when riding, she's off the track and just loves to go. She's PERFECT at a barrel race and needs minimal tuning at home but I just can't figure out how to get her exercised at home. She won't trot or lope, it's pretty much a sideways run literally the entire trail ride. She can not be ridden down without nearly killing herself and me. So I was thinking of upping her dose but wasn't sure what was standard. Thanks! |

Location: Texas | I had one that was like that and the best way to keep her in shape was to pony her or lunge her. |

Location: South Central Florida | I would try lunging, round pen or pony before I tried upping the doseage. I have used it a long time ago on a mare. Had GREAT results, but the balance was the key. Since the previous owners had her on that, I would hesitate changing that, especially since you said she is good at a race. Ours was the opposite, great to practice, but had panic attacks at shows. We were able to wean her off the medication but changing it could effect her performance. |

Location: WI | I use it for my horse when he's on stall rest, which unfortunately happened again last week. I don't know how much to give for a horse to still ride/run, but when I have 1cc it last MAYBE 5 days and he's still not as calm as I'd like him to be for stall rest. Too calm to compete though. I can still hand walk him and he's not acting stupid.
What else have you tried? Turnout, feed, etc? I've never heard of using reserpine for a bleeder... guanabenz, yes but that's not long lasting. |

Location: Hill Country of TEXAS!! | There are two different mg they come in so make sure the dosage is for the mgs. I had the 2.5 and used 1/2 a cc to start and you move up 1/4cc as needed until you find what works. I would pony the mare to exercise. I wouldnt piss her off and fight her to get her exercised. I would also try UlcerGuard. |

| Did you find lunging her kept her in good enough shape? Did you saddle her to lunge her just for the extra conditioning? I think this is what I'll have to do with her as I don't have another horse to pony with. |

| I have had this mare checked from head to tail, no lameness or soreness, teeth are great and chiropractor said she's one of the most inline horses he's seen. She's an absolute doll on the ground and at a race, I mean perfect! At home she's an entire different story, she's not herd bound, not barn sour, she just acts like she was flat raced every time she was ever saddled. It's absolutely annoying and painful to ride all the bouncing and jigging but I mostly worry about her having a heart attack! I ride her in an o ring or hackamore to try and relax her, I've tried a bit with a roller, I've tried everything I know. She goes from walk/jig to trotting for about 60 seconds then it's a fast lope in place but going sideways the entire ride!!! I would love to just lunge her but I didn't know if that would keep her fit enough.
I'm not sure the mg dosing, I just get a syringe at a time and the label doesn't say. |

Location: Bandera, TX | You will probably find that to be 2.5 mg, when you get your next dose ask the vet. Please make sure that everyone who would care for this mare is aware she is on reserpine. As she is at high risk for untoward reactions with xylazine, detomide and ketamine. I've seen horses that would require the max dose of reserpine. Every three weeks. Have you thought to give her a drug holiday then she how she does? On perhaps another medication? You could also try the pills on a daily schedule and get better results. If you up the dosage make sure you talk to your vet about the S/S to look for that indicate OD. I've had some horses that would get the 4 wheeler treatment as their form of exercise. I have a friend that rodeos on a horse that I could never get alongwith. I wouldride that sucker 6-8 miles before I could work him or make a run on him. She simply uses a pony horse and jumps on him right before the race starts, no fuss, no muss, and they win all the time. |

| I appreciate the heads up regarding drug interaction. I had pulled her off the reserpine for May and June because I saw no difference riding her when she was on it vs when I didn't give it, but she did bleed without it even with Lasix. I tried the 4 wheeler and I guess I'm just not coordinated enough to shift gears, steer and hold her, lol. I can't afford to buy and maintain a horse to just pony her with. I have switched her to low starch feed, put her on smartpak ultra calm, platinum ulcer med ( scope was clean), she stays turned out 24/7. I guess I will continue her on the dose my vet recommend for her to keep her from bleeding and just hope lunging her keeps her in shape enough to be competitive and not bleed. |
