When do you all start ponying your youngsters for exposure? How long of a ride would be acceptable, say if you are going to take them along on trail ride with some hills at a walk?

Location: where ever my L/Q trl is parked		My colt is 2 months old and I started already... first pony- I tied him to his mom, let her pull him around in the pasture for about 10 minutes.  Long enough to get him use to me being on his mom, the height sometimes freaks them out, and for him to walk or trot beside her without setting back every few feet.  Then a few days later I ponyied him off of her again tied and went out to arena- down the block and back, probably a football field length.  Waited 2 more days and ponyied about a mile all together with me leading him off mom.  He did great and now even when I'm leading him around on foot he stays with me without pulling back constantly.  I'll pony him once or twice a week but always a walk and never to the point of him getting really tired.  Next lesson trailer loading.  
I don't do any hills or straining work, flat ground only.  Hill work much later maybe after they are a long yearling.

Location: Deep South		Lots of people pony or use walkers to prep for yearling sales. I've never heard of starting any younger than that.
