We are looking into moving to texas. I would prefer north texas. What areas would you prefer. Do any of you live there? What do you like? Dislike?

Jobs? In Agriculture? Or related. Do you know of anything open? Does your job allow you to "play" on the weekends?

Of course there is a lot of barrel races.

I know it would be a big move but definitely something we are interested in. Any information would be helpful!

I live in Paradise, Texas, northwest of Ft Worth about 35 miles.  I do not work at this point, so cann't really say about  the job market, though I hear its in fairly good shape.
I guess the main down point is the Texas summers, don't know where you live, but  summer is pretty tough here. But, by the same token, the winters are generally pretty good, but
every so many year we do get a cold one.  Even though I live out from town, I can usually be at any big store or mall in an hour or less.  Weatherford has really grown in the last
30 years, lots of people and traffic, but its not far to drive out of town and be in the country.  The largest town I live near is Decatur, which is much smaller than Weatherford.

I have been here (fort worth) since Nov and I LOVE IT! The people are great, the barrel races are so plentiful you don't need to have weekend days off there are so many that start late on the week days you will always be able to go. They said this was a bad winter but coming from SD I thought it was awesome!  Summer so far has not been "bad" to me.. Its HOT but tolerable. The only bad thing I have found so far is the price of land. I have been looking for 6  months and can not find anything within 60 miles of north forth worth that is affordable for me for a second home.. (looking in the 150,000 and lower price) Most of what I have found in that price range is 5 acres with a double wide in a trailerhood type of deal.. and I just don't want to spend that kind of money for that and they all need variations of work.. Now if I would sell my place and spend $350,000 plus I could get something fairly nice but I'm not to that point yet.. North East seems to be more price affordable but I have to be close to FW because of my job..

What kind of work do you do? We live in east Texas and it is beautiful, sandy for the most part and barrel races and ropings pretty much every night of the week within an hours drive.
There are certain areas to stay away from, check the soil type first and foremost. Black gumbo clay is a definite NO.

We live NW of San Antonio and I find it too hot and too rocky and the hay is way over priced. $10.00 for a bale of good Coastal and $16.50 for a square bale of good Alfafla.

It seems that the happiest people in Texas live in East Texas. Just an observation.

Stephenville is about 70 miles sw of Ft Worth about 30 east of Ft. Worth is Dallas.
Stephenville has a lot of affordable housing and land also they call it the Cowboy Capital of Texas.  Lots of barrel racing, roping, bull riding, horse shows etc.  I have friends that work in Ft. Worth, just north of down town and they drive each day to work from here.   We don't get as much rain as the north and east section gets.  East side has big tall pine trees where Erath county (S'ville) has cedar scrubs and live oak trees.  Down south like Houston gets rain and mosquitos, San Antonio they get dirt and cactus- j.k people It's nice down there too.  I wouldn't live west of where I am now, but lots of people do.

I live in Wise county, NW of FW, & winters are typically mild most days. The worst weather is between Christmas and Valentines Day. Aside from the occasional ice storms, most winter days are 25 degree lows to 60 degrees high. The worst icy days (maybe 10 per season) will get down to 10 degrees for the low. Everything in Texas closes on those days LOL
Temps are warm enough that you can ride on most winter days. I actually ride more & go to more races during the cooler weather. July & August are tough, but this has been an exceptionally cool summer. I think that we have only had a few days to hit 100 degrees. And it's been wet. Lots of years we have 60 days over 100 degrees & no rain. I hate those summers. Hay is high. Let us know if you get in the neighborhood & we will give you a big ol Tx welcome.

The real estate taxes are high but you don't have State income tax and in the long run is a much better deal money wise.
Texas is a right to work state and it depends on what area an what you do when it comes to wages. The cost of living is a lot less here then AZ and is why we chose Texas over Arizona.

I was ready to move, I love Texas! My husband didn't like the wages or the property tax. Arizona is going to have water restrictions very soon, mark my words. Plus my horses are in a dry lot when turned out, I love the nice green pastures of east Texas, sigh.

With so many people moving to Texas...it won't be long and we will also have water restrictions as San Antonio already has them and has for some time.
I miss having a plush pasture. I also miss feeding horses cheaply. As far as the wages...it didn't matter as we retired here. As far as real estate taxes...they are cheap next to where we came from. The house we sold up north is paying over $6,000. a year and that is on the low end of real estate taxes.

I LOVE living in Texas! We live in east Texas and I think it's just beautiful! I hate July and August but the rest of the year is perfect! I love the rolling hills, pine trees and lush pastures (we have to pen our horse up to keep them from foundering!). Barrel Races are probably not as frequent as the Stephenville area but there's definitely something close every weekend! Best of luck.

Pretty mild.
We might get a week of really cold weather or ice and snow a year.
Otherwise, they are pretty nice.
It is unusual for it to stay below 40's for very long.

Love it down here. I live just northeast of Denton in between Aubrey and Pilot Point. This week (not including weekends) there are six barrel races within 40 miles of where I live, and four within 15 miles.

The summer has been pretty mild so far this year. The winters aren't bad - we may have 1-2 weeks TOTAL of bad winter weather each year.

As for jobs... I don't have much input there - I moved to Texas after I got offered a job.
