I have a 5 year old gelding really really nice and he's been on barrels past couple years taken really slow and I'm ready to start entering him but can't get any speed out of him. I know he has it by the way he runs around in the pasture and I can free lunge him and he will give 100% . So do you have any advice on how to break into his speed while I'm on him?

I'd try breezing him some. Fallon Taylor actually had an interesting video on this up on YouTube
(ducking for cover
)
She was talking about encouraging her barrel horses to really take off and fire when she asked. It was interesting and I feel you can learn something from anyone .... even if its what not to do!
Anyway, that's where I would start a younger one to encourage them and build trust between you both.
ETA the link to the video I mentioned -

Some of it could. Be from the way you ride, are you in the go
position?

I match race my horses against each other so they can learn how to really run with a rider and to stimulate their competitive drive.
