I am really trying to avoid more medical bills , especially just to have them stabilize it like I have  .
I took a spill off the truck bed last night around 6pm and potentially broke my middle finger at the middle joint.
Its been almost 24 hours now and it is still swollen a lot and I cannot bend it inwards at all. I went to Wal Mart and got a splint to prevent it from catching on everything .

My concern is it being my dominant hand . Is it normal to have no movement at this stage , possibly from the swelling or is that a sign of something that needs to be corrected with the tendon? I have never broken a finger before and it is pretty painful still .

I'd splint it, Ice it, and if it was still broke in a month, go see a doctor!

Is it crooked? if it's straight and just swollen I personally wouldn't go to the doctor, im sure the swelling is whats preventing it from moving...... BUT I warn you I'm no doctor - just a cheap-ass! I think I've almost broken every finger, including my hand, and possibly every toe twice. Went to the doctor a few times because they were side ways but they just usually tied them to the other finger and charged me my right arm!

Thank you. It is still straight so I'll stick to splint and ice for a while. Such a pain but I am so hesitant to go to the doc right now . Husband just broke his hand two weeks ago , got charged a fortune for xrays & ortho visits , then re xrays just to have them strap two fingers together as well.

Thank You ! Ill stop stressing

My sister recently broke her ring finger on her left hand, but it was not broken at the joint.  All they did was realign it and kept it taped to the middle finger for probably six weeks, but it was not at the joint.  If it were my dominant hand, I would get an x-ray if it is broken at the joint.

Once I dislocated my middle finger, was side ways and hurt oh my god it hurt so bad, I was holding it with my other hand and started to squeeze it to stop the pain and then it sliped back into place now that was the best feeling ever and the pain stoped.

I've broken many fingers some of the twice... The few time I went to the Dr. all he did was splint it and tell me to ice it and take advil for the pain... Not once did they put any type of cast on it. It's gonna hurt for a long time... I kept bumping mine on the shift knob of my pickup...   I'm also a cheap ass and I dont' go to the dr. for much.

I broke and dislocated my finger years ago and went in to the doctor and they didn't set it correctly in the cast and it's still crooked and sometimes painful. I would splint it and then tape it to another finger to help stabilize. But if in doubt, go into the doctor to prevent long term issues.

I would be concerned about a torn tendon more than a break. Yes swelling is gonna cause some problem with movement. Try to determine if its that you can't make it move a certain way, not that its so stiff it won't go (if that makes sense) A lot of people say they can't move because of pain but that's not what I'm talking about, if your brain tells your hand to move your finger and it literally won't, that's a sign of a torn something which requires a hand specialists intervention. If it were me, I'd ice it, keep it elevated to encourage the swelling to go down, keep it splinted and go see either an Ortho or your doctor if you can't move it. (some insurances require you to get a referral for them to cover an orthopedist) Avoid going to the ER, will save you money and they can usually only do, plain xrays and splint like you've already done. Good luck! Hope you feel better soon!

Thank you everyone. Today it is relatively painless unless I bump it or catch it wrong in the splint.
My concern is definitely the tendon at this point. It won't move at all , and the brain telling it to do something it won't is what I am trying to wrap my head around. I can physically bend it a tad bit with my other hand but it spring back into the straight stiff position. I guess a visit may be in my near future to the ortho , walking around with a permanent middle finger up isn't all that wonderful. Now we I have to try and figure out how to trim dogs nails this weekend.

I broke my middle finger in high school pulling up on a basketball net to touch the rim and it got tangled.....NOT the brightest move LOL

It was completely sideways. My coach popped it back right and I never went to the doctor. It took weeks for the bruising and swelling to go down and we taped it for a good while. Its fine now and doesn't even hurt.

The two most used fingers are the middle finger and the nose picking finger.  Why is it those two are the ones that are always getting hurt???
