We have had several people tell us they are interested in breeding to our new black lab that will be trained to duck and pheasant hunt. We aren't sure which way to go....we thought we would like to keep intact for breeding but we have heard that they don't hunt as well bc they have other things on their mind...and his purpose will be hunting not necessarily for breeding so we don't want to take away from that. We've also heard they can become aggressive after breeding also. Isn't it better to cut him early than waiting?

Any advice/info/experience to help us decide?

I would say- neuter now. If you hunt with another person and their female is coming in season (although unnoticably), your hunt would be ruined. You don't seem to want to be a breeder for business so you should do what is best for you. Not what is best for your friends and aquaintances. Also plenty of labs in shelters as puppies needing homes. Suggest they check into them.

I agree, neuter. So many unwanted animals destroyed because people won't spay or neuter. It's heart breaking.

If you're not really into the breeding aspect, I would say neuter. I have a lovely female chocolate lab (she's old now, 12 lol) that everyone wanted puppies from, even the vets commented on how she was built almost perfectly and would have been a great choice for breeding. But there are SO many labs out there, and I don't even do anything with my dogs, she was just a pet. So no puppies for her.

This was her as a youngin. No idea what she was looking at, because really the only thing she wants to hunt is food LOL

Let's see pictures of your guy, because I love labs :)

Unless you are willing to spend the money on all the genetic testing and make sure the same was done on the other end, neuter.

My Boone baby. I agree, that we should neuter but SO wants to breed.

Boone is 9 weeks old today, we've had him just over a week and he knows his name, knows sit, come, no(he knows that one best ;)), and plays fetch like a pro. I can't believe how fast he picks things up!!

This is spot on.  And as a former Animal Control Officer I can't tell you how many labs and pits I had to euthanize. There is no shortage of either in the shelters!

I agree to neuter. Already a ridiculous amount of unwanted dogs out there.

Neuter him. We have bird dogs (French Britts). Our male doesn't have his head in the game, if females are around he has to go check things out and mark his territory on everything then he goes on but he is still young lol. If you are wanting a good hunting dog go ahead and get him fixed he will mature quicker because he wont be thinking about other "things" lol

Neuter, there are plenty of puppies and breeders out there.

We had seriously considered raising Australian Shepherds because it seemed so difficult to find a standard puppy.  But once we really started searching for Bodacious, we found there were enough breeders if we knew where to look.  Then after we rescued and rehomed a few older Aussies, I realized that I didn't want to raise puppies then have no control over what happened to them after they sold.  I am happier just knowing the ones I have will be forever taken care of.

Hes going to be a hunting dog and thats what you guys bought him for, get him neuter, sounds like the friends are wanting free puppies and just think of all the puppies that will get tossed out later on in their life, tell these people where you bought Boone and they can go buy one from the breeder. Give Boone a good chance at what he was bred for

Boone is adorable but if he sires puppies I wonder how many of those black pups will end up being killed in shelters? Sadly black dogs are often overlooked at shelters and are more likely to be PTS than any other color of dog. I personally love all colors of dogs but be sure you and your SO think all this through before deciding to leave him intact. Plus, if a female is in heat anywhere nearby he won't be thinking about hunting. And an intact male means you're more likely to deal with him marking his territory in the house and humping the air or things he shouldn't lol.

I would say to get the dog neutered, simply because you gave the impression that you got the dog to hunt, not to breed.

If you were seriously thinking of getting into breeding there is a lot that should come into play.

I do think it is okay to breed to better the breed, BUT I think that is a rare trait in most dog breeders today.

Genetic testing, conformation, bloodlines, ability.....all of these things should play a role. Randomly deciding to breed for a few litters for fun to make a quick buck is not quality breeding. That is where if you are going to be an average breeder-then your clients are going to likely be families wanting pets.

IMO if you are going to be an average breeder-neuter. As others have said there are a lot of dogs out there that fit the bill for being the perfect pet where genetic testing, bloodlines, ability etc. don't matter (aka shelter dogs).

Thank you! He really is awesome! We've decided that he will be neutered! :) I know all too well about rescuing and seeing the dogs at shelters and I don't want to add to that....SO just needed some convincing ;) lol

I am glad that you have decided to neuter him....he is a "looker" with soft eyes........but he will be a much better hunter if neutered.

purebred, champion bloodline black labs are a dime a dozen. I have one that was given to me. He's now 10. It crossed our mind to breed him as well and we opted to have him neutered. He was a great hunting dog in his day and I will have another lab someday to take my boys hunting.

My brother in law lives in a state where the bird hunting is really good. He said if you want a great hunting dog, to just visit the shelters after hunting season. Some people apparently find it cheaper to buy a new hunting dog every fall rather than deal with their high energy in the off season. Sad
