Anything other than stampede strings?
I bought the hat that fits the best (it wasn't anything expensive.. only about $65), but it would still probably fly off if it weren't for the strings.  I hate the strings... of course it's just a vanity thing, but is there a key to having a hat that will stay on naturally but not be so tight that you have to pry it off?  I see too many people making runs without strings to feel like I'm missing out on some secret...  or do higher priced hats just fit better and can stay on during runs?

clear bra straps and a needle and thread. Create a loop on either side of head and then hook bra strap to either end. Adjustable and sightless.

You can buy them at most department stores in the "bra accessory" departments.

First, make sure your hat is the actual proper size for your dome.

Then.... I take a piece of duct tape and make an inside out loopy with it. Then I put that on the front of the inside of the hat, then put it on my head. It sticks better if you don't have a bunch of make up and lotion and stuff on your forehead.

Also, make sure to not stick it to your eyebrows.
Also, bobby pins into the sweatband.

Doesn't it make a "mystery chin roll" though?

I had to go back and have a hat guy stretch my hat from a round to a long oval shape. That helped TREMENDOUSLY ... then I just make sure and pull it down and over my ears. Never has come off again :)

its kinda hard to see in the pic ... but it is pulled down over my ears :)

How do I know if I have the proper size?  Is that just a feeling thing and saying "Oh, a 6 1/2 fits better than a 6 3/4?"... I just tried different sizes on in the store and went with what wasn't too tight, but wasn't loose when I moved.

Also, does your hair get caught in the duct tape?  Just trying to see I'm picturing it right.  Fold the tape to where the outter parts are the sticky side and let one sticky side grab to the hat and the other side to your face?

How do I get the bobby pins attached to my hair?  I see how they do it on crows, but the head of hair is exposed...  My hat doesn't have a sweatband... just a leather band at the bottom and the opening is at the top... I guess it would make sense if it had a sweatband and the opening was at the bottom.

Thanks for the suggestions! I'll try to figure out how to put them to use!

Thanks!  Maybe my head is off and I need it re-shaped!  I just bought one in my size and didn't have it shaped... I'm thinking that was my first mistake!!

HA! no worries we all go through the whole trial and error stuff!

Most western stores will either for free or a nominal fee, reshape -stretch - etc a hat if you bring it in with you. I always tip my hat guy and he cleans 'em up really well too.

I used to have a huge problem with this.. I tried everything..duct tape, window stripping everything.. the only thing that works for me to pull down the back before I put it on.. it doesn't feel tight at all.. no more hat headache or sticky things on my forehead..and it stays on!

Since you have a leather forehead band, spray that band (especially on forehead area) with hair spray and then immediately put it on. It will stick to your forehead like glue. Kind of sucks taking it off but it sure won't go anywhere. Unfortunately can't do this with the sweatband style. This has always worked for me. You can do hair spray on the band all around but it may then kind of pull your hair down when you put it on, and there's no adjusting once it's on so just on your forehead would probably be best.

Hairspray on the forehead part of the hat band and bobby pins the rest of the way around. Toupe tape also works really good on the forehead!

I hate wearing hats, so I just buy one that fits, then braid my hair and shove the sucker down as far as I can.  The front is usually a tad bit lower than the back. I did have to invest in a long oval.

My favorite hat is a cheap palm leaf I got in OKC, it is soft, stretches, and never gives me a headache. My felt feels the same, soft and stretchy.

The higher quality hats will fit your head better and more comfotably.

Fold the back of the hat liner down. Put your hat on front first and keep the back liner down when you pull the back on. I havent lost my hat yet and that is what I do. Does that make sense? If not, I will try and take pictures.

You can also put paper or folded up tape in the interior leather band, stuffing it around usually at the back and front to make it fit pretty snug. Helps keep it on. Just pull down tight and doesn't stick to your head as bad. Could give you a headache if you wear too long though. I usually just wear a stampede string, lol.

Just want to throw it out there that if you have a really nice hat made of beaver fur or the like, hairspray will eventually ruin it.

This is what I do also. I was very skeptical at first but it really works, even with my straw that doesn't come down as far on my ears
