| Ok so I pulled a horse out of the pasture after being off 1.5 months and lunged her Saturday. I had over-reach boots on her but that's it. I just had her trot. Nothing crazy since she's in crap shape. Well when I said whoa and she came to me she had blood running down her left cannon bone. She had somehow smacked her leg with her hoof (no shoes-trimmed). I cold hosed it and turned her out so she would exercise. That night it looked fine. No swelling. Sunday morning looked fine, no swelling. Had a kid ride her around Sunday morning just walking for about 20 mins. Nothing big. Rinsed her and turned her out during the day Sunday. Sunday night looked fine, no swelling. Today, Monday morning frickin huge. I rode and she is sound. It is a little tender to the touch but she is not off. I figured the movement would do some good. She probably stood in one spot all night. Anywho, I standing wrapped her, gave her bute and turned her out. Just went out there and took the standing off and cold hosed it. 1/2 swelling down but there is a big ole knot under the scratch. Hard as a rock. I put her BOT quick wraps on it and put her in her stall. She is MAD that she is up but I am not turning her out with those things on.
What do I do? Any suggestions? She lives on THE Muscle Mass with extra strength NutrWound in it btw.
Mon PM update. Went out to feed around 8:30 and took her BOT quick wraps that had been on since about 5 off. Looked totally different. The over all swelling of the leg was down a little but not much from what the standing wraps had done so we are still at no tendon definition but the leg is still slender in form not as swollen as stocked up would be BUT the know was probably less than half the size. Huge change there. So happy. I took the wraps off while we did chores (about 30 mins) and by the time I was done it was starting to get big again so she will wear the wraps overnight. It's amazing what increased circulation will do. I'm leaning less towards fracture and more towards bruise now. I don't think a fracture would decrease in size like that in 3 hours. I did go ahead and give 1g bute tonight just to continue the progress. Thank you everyone :) :)
Thursday AM Update (after vet apt):
So we did xrays this morning and no breaks or fractures thank God. Basically she aggravated the lining of the bone between the cannon bone and splint bone causing swelling to put pressure on the suspensory. The object of the game now is to keep her stalled and keep swelling away. Looking at about a month or two of stall time. Doc said anything to keep her legs cool & tight. The more swelling, the more damage to suspensory the less chance of coming back from this. If ANYONE has ANY advice on what they would use or how they would go about treating her leg while she is stalled please feel free. I have a somewhat game plan of ice boots, cold hosing, bute, nitroxide, brace/ liniment, standing bandages, Ice tight ect. Not In that order but just different things to have in my arsenal since this will be a several week process.

Location: 100 miles from Nowhere, AR | She probably bruised it. I'll take a pic of my mare's leg in a minute where she hung it in a panel on the round pen (and remodeled it for me :-P). It looks bad but she's sound. |

| I would get it xrayed, had one similar had goose egg never lame, finally took her to the vet on day 11 and she fractured her cannon bone. Vet says day 14 is when the demineralization begins, I did tildren immediately, my horse came back and is running good with no problems. |

| thank you guys/. I figure if I don't wig out over it, it will be fractured but if I lose my marbles she will be fine. Seems to be how it goes. I was a little worried about it being fractured. She is on some ridiculous supplements one of which is specifically for bone stuff (fractures/ spurs ect). If she's not better next week or by the end of this week I may have her looked at. Dadgum horses!!!!! |

| Hate to be the negative Nellie, but the bot wraps took all the edema out of the cannon bone fracture while she wore the bot, but left off for a day the localized edema came back.
If it were my horse I would X-ray but that is because I have bad luck.
I do suggest not working the horse till all the edema is gone without the aids of bot, and/or bute. |

| Bump for Tues PM pictures. I am currently cold hosing 2-3X daily, bute, standing wrap during the day, BOT quick wraps at night. She is still sound. It is very tender and warm on the lump on her leg. There is a front view and a side view. The side view looks horrible. |

Location: Under The Big Sky Of Texas | Did you have her checked out by a vet yet and if so what did they say about it, if she were mine I would be getting a few x-rays to make sure its nothing serious. I would be keeping her in a stall and no riding untill I had her vet checked. She could have had a hair line fracture and being turned out could have cause more problems. I would be taking this a bit more serious.. I see some swelling in her knee too. |

| thank you everyone.
I know it looks like her knee has fluid but it doesn't thank goodness. I saw that in the picture too when I took it last night and went back and made sure she didn't lol.
I am now talking with one of the vets I work with. I think I'll take her with me when I go to work tonight and we'll xray her in the morning. Ugh :( |

Location: USA | I had one that did that at the trainers but it also had more hide scraped off. They cold hosed it and stuff, then it developed proud flesh. I was out of town while all this happened. She had sent me pics of it and it looked bad, but she kept reasurring me it wasn't as bad as it looked. She sent me a video of the horse working and I could tell she was sore in that leg. Long story short, horse had fractured the bone, it developed a sequestran (spelling?) and had to have surgery to remove all the dead bone.
Hope yours xrays clear and you don't have to go through all that!!

| Well I will give you some good news... My 4 yr old decided to kick a pipe fence and connected just below her hock. Right after it happened she took off trotting/loping on three legs so we hurried out to catch her. Took her to the vet that day, on day 3 and day 14. All xrays and ultra sounds were clean but it took about 2 months before all the swelling went away and even then when we started turning her back out on pasture if she got too crazy it seemed to puff up a little so I took her back in... everything was still fine. It was a long and frustrating process but she is good as new now, hope yours isn't as drawn out as this but keeping my fingers crossed for good news for you :) |

They basically just went in there and scraped away the dead bone. It was like the top few millimeters of her cannon bone were crushed and the bone died because there was no blood supply to it anymore. The proud flesh kept getting worse and worse despite treating it and wrapping it, and that's when it was decided to take her for xrays. What sucked was I was out of town during this entire ordeal, and thankfully she was at a friends place (I needed someone I trusted to do daily dressing changes and all that stuff) who drove her to the vet for the xrays and they ended up doing the surgery. Once the dead bone was removed, the proud flesh went away and the wound was able to heal. She's 100% sound on it. I think she was off for a couple of weeks, then light turnout X 1 week, then light riding and so on. She will always have a little raised area on the front of that bone from the wound, but it's more cosmetic than anything. |
