We just moved to northern Ontario/MN border. There are wolves and bears here which I have not had to deal with in regards to the horses. I don't think the bears would be a problem? I am more concerned with the wolves. Has anyone had any issues with them? How do you keep your horses safe and really any advice would be great. Maybe I'm overly nervous but better safe than sorry.

I would say stall them at night and turned out during the day.

I would find other horse owner in the area and talk to them. Just my opinion.

I don't know many people here and I have asked a couple people. They said no problems so far with the their horses but cows and calves are always being killed.

We have been bringing them up at night into the barn yard but I'm not sure how cocky the wolves are. I do have a mini donkey but I'm sure she would be useless. I plan to find a big one at some point as additional security.

I'm fb friends with a girl who had a run in with wolves in her pasture, her horses saved her. Her story was published in Whitetails magazine. If you have fb check out Minnesota Horses, good group to join.

My wolf keeps all the other mongrals off our property. We used to have a horible bobcat and coyote issue. Thats the BEST investment ever. I bought him when we was 2months old. He was fairly wild when we got him, had never been handled. We raised him in the house with the other dogs and crate trained him. They aren't like normal dogs, you def have to be the 'pack leader' from early on with them, but they are the most friendly loyal things. Ours was raised around the horses and cows, and just like with our healers we taught him not to chase them and such. He will howl at night every now and then, but hes always on the move and keeps everything else out of his territory.

It's pretty simple... Wolf eats horse... Horse cannot outrun Wolf.... One on one horse kills wolf.. More than one wolf equals a dead horse..

Bears and wolves will eat horse meat. Get a great pyrenese or Kuvas they tend to run off preditors and just as large as a wolf. Keep your horses close at night.

You can trap them. Check with the DNR. People I know trap them and that keeps the numbers down. The most vulnerable tend to be calves and smaller animals. I think mules will fend them off as well.

Now I would be worried about the mini donkey, with it being so small I would think that's what the wolfs would target first, if you were going to have problems with them.

So they hole up hopefully off your property to die, then you dont have to bury them or worry about the legality of it.

Because they die slowly and in much pain.. Just like a human does.... You know what?? People like this really make me mad..... God put the wolf here for a reason...
Before we came along... the Wolf culled out the old and sick and weak and stupid so they would not propagate.. Then WE show up... We kill off nature's culling device and WE kill the trophys... The biggest most powerful bulls and bucks and rams... leaving the weak males to cover the females... Then we blame the wolves for killing off the best... PFttt!!!!

WHAT??? Nothing to say?? In case you are wondering... I lived there through the reintegration of wolves in the Sawtooth Range and Yellowstone area.. I heard all the sniveling from the sheep farmers and cattle farmers... Well... sheep and cows fall under the heading of Stupid... those are plains animals and are best raised there.. Most hated were the RICH hunters that don't seem to understand they have killed off the best males.. leaving only the weak males to breed the females... We would not do that with horses!!! Why do you think it will work with deer and elk and Moose??? Just how stupid are you??!??
