Location: Where Governor's make the liscense plates | A boarders horse had a bad wound on her leg over a month ago got sutured up and did 20 days of smz's because after ten the site was still oozing a bit. So after the antibiotics she started coming in from the pasture covered in her own diarrhea not eating or drinking right and then she'd be fine for 3-4 days then bam she seems colicy again- Our regular vet said maybe she has an ulcer so she went on ulcergard ever since. Then 2 weeks ago I rushed her to ER vet he thought her flora could've been messed up from antibiotics she stayed with him for 5 fives she had been getting banamine and still was running a 101.6 temp she coliced bad with him so he tubed her and pushed fluids for 5 days sent her home on ulcergard and metronizole(Sp?) Btw her poop smelled very weird almost like if you've ever smelled parvo puppy poop. He ran a fecal and no worms we're on a strict schedule. This mare is down again tonight no temp but colicy we are at a loss her gums are on the pale side again we have no idea what it could be. I dont believe its an ulcer in my heart of hearts. Please anyone with suggestions
Oh WBC count was slightly low but all other levels were fine.

| Platinum has a product called bio sponge, I got mine from the vet, I would follow the directions on the package, it supposedly works wonders on horses with diarrhea.
Thankfully I haven't had to use mine. |

I think the owners last option is the U of I... which is where I personally would've taken her in the first place, but money wise it was a better option if she continued to progress but its an every 3-4 day thing. Her bloodwork came back fine except for WBC count slightly low or elevated I cannot remember but I do know it does matter.. This horse has never been sick before shes 16-17 yr old grade mare. current on all vax coggins etc. Shes lost 200+ lbs in the last month it is breaking my heart... The money for care I'm sure isnt truly an issue but they thought the smaller ER vet could help :( |

Location: Where Governor's make the liscense plates | Yeah the vet also said her gut sounds are moving so fast that he could stand outside her stall and hear them. Ill let the owners know to all the vet about hindgut ulcers thank you so much |

Location: Texas | I have a friend whose mare would intermittently have bouts of diarrhea. They finally found that giving her a tube of electrolytes once a week or so cures her. It's the cheapish orange tube you can get at TSC.

Location: NOT at Wal Mart | I think this is more than ulcers, if it were my horse I would have her at the university first thing in the am. Smelly diarrhea, temp, colic symptoms sounds almost like the mare is trying to go septic.

Location: Opelousas, LA | Her gut sure sounds irritated, is she still on omeprazole? If she is and it hasn't helped then I would take her off of it because it can cause problems when used too long in some horses.
I would try some Probios and BioSponge then start her on GastroPlus or Succeed. Also, no more banamine unless it is a dire emergency. |

Location: High heels in the air... | I just went thru a colic...the vet needs to run a fecal for salmonella and pull stomach fluids (done with a long needle) to be analyzed by the lab...after a colic, the lining of the colon is weakening...sometimes causing bile to leak into the horses system therefore keeping them sick...my gelding had to have constant IV fluids with ice boots and low doses of pain killers..also given antibiotics and probiotics to stabilize the gut flora...luckily , just a slight colic, no surgery no salmonella...he stayed at the clinic two weeks and is fine now...if there is diarrhea, that is a sign of infection...she needs care ASAP...just my experience... |

I've been thinking like you.. completely lost though she was a completely different horse by the end of her 5day stay two weeks ago. She's typically an eating machine now she's barely eating fresh grass when we walked her around tonight outside |

| I work at a vet. We are currently treating a foal that has brodocaucus (sp?). Not saying that is what the horse has. She has been on antibiotics for it. She now has the runs bad, fever, not eating ect. I personally recommend bio sponge, probios, fluids, antibiotics. That would be my game plan. I cannot say which antibiotics- that would be a vets OP but definitely the fluids, bio sponge and pro bios. |
