Won't my horse run for me? I let a girl use him for HS rodeos and he runs and wins for her. Her riding style is very similar to mine. He seems to be a free runner for her. Previous owned won several rodeos and barrel races on him. But yet I can not for the life of me make him run. I can take him on one of our dirt roads and sprint him and he most defiantly runs but when we get to a arena he doesn't. He just wants to lope along all slow like a snail. Anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

Do you have a video of her riding him to compare to you riding him?  The answer may be in the video.

It also could be their mindset.  Maybe they are more let
'er rip than you are or something.  I don't know.  When you start thinking about how the horse won for someone else you start putting a lot of pressure on yourself.  Try to put that aside if you can and run your horse for fun & be fearless. Easier said than done.

I have my saddlemaker coming next week to see about doing something different for him. The way he is built causes my current saddle to sit down hill and makes me feel like I'm going to fall forward. So I sit it up higher than I would like to. So after talking with him we think it may be preventing him from running because it may be pinching his shoulders. I'm going to leave it up to him as to whether we have him a new saddle made with a different tree or use the current one but slide it back to where it's suppose to be and use a Shim. Either way I'm having a new saddle made but changing the tree or using a Shim is completely up to him because he knows more about what he's doing than I do.

A bad saddle fit came to mind first. Can you run him once in the saddle that she uses and see if he will run with you in hers?

I would like to see a video comparison too. I borrowed a horse from my trainer at the time years ago… she was 2D local on her and I needed her to fill a spot for the 2008 NBHA TX state show due to my horse being hurt.. We went to a wrapn3 and I was 8th in the 1D the first day. It was a total shock. She always let her cruise to the first and apparently I sent her way harder than she ever did because she thought she would go by the 1st.. well she inhaled it and we clocked like 4 tenths off..

So at the NBHA state show...I qualified for the short round in the 2D and tipped a barrel to place 4th in the 1D finals.. we ran 2 tenths off Firewaterontherocks. I think for me it was the fact that I didn't know the horse that well, and I didn't have all the preconceived notions about how she worked and how she should be ran and I didn't really know any of her weaknesses. I ran her with a clean mental slate and I did really well.

I think that is also why I typically do really well when I first get a new horse. Everything is a clean slate and I just run and don't over think. Once I own the horse for a while I start dissecting everything and I make everything complicated.

My first thoughts were……compare the videos of your runs against hers. I highly doubt that you run the horse the same. Then, if you think the saddle “may” be the problem, try borrowing other brands/models, etc from your friends to see if that helps before having a new one made.

Please don't take offence to this comment, but

Do you ride as well as they do?  Is he taking care of you?  Do you overthink what he is going to do?  I am borrowing a mare and I can get her to run at the top of the 1D and her owner is in the bottom of the 2D on her.  We have very different riding styles.  I have a tendancy to throw one the reins and just ride, where he rides 2 handed and has more controlled pretty patterns.  I had a gelding that would run at the top for me, but put a smaller/less secure rider on him and he would take care of them and wait for them to catch up.

Just a suggestion, don't worry about being pretty and having "nice" barrels. Just ride your horse and be fast.

I was wondering the same thing about him taking care of you, Maybe the other girl that had him was a more aggressive rider and you might be more layed back, and he knows the difference.
Did you changed out any of the tack, I know that you ride in a different saddle, but what about the bit is it the same bit he was being ran in?
I agree on the video's I would watch her running him and then have a video of you so that you can compare the two styles of riding. It just could be that you have a whole different style of riding.

Make sure the saddle tree is designed to fit back behind shoulders some are designed to fit on top personally I don't like one to fit behind as it can pinch the shoulders

I put a lighter bit on him becuse I was and may still be hanging on his face. It may be my mind set. She is the type if she isn't winning it isn't fun. I'm just happy to be there win or not. So I wonder if she is doing something more aggressive than me and I'm just not seeing it.

And another thing I was thinking about, how long have you had this horse, sometimes it takes a while to get with a new one.

October will be 2yrs. I made some very good runs on him for a while. First show I took him to I won 2D with 180 something riders and only 7 in the 1D.

Could also be your body position.  If you are too forward or even too leaned back that can tell a horse to set up or not fire.

I'm in my way now to a 3 day show in Mississippi. I'm gonna kick and kiss and be aggressive. If he bucks, he just bucks. I wear a helmet. Lol
