Location: Prosser, WA | What are some known cowhorse bloodlines that cross well into barrel racing? I like Playgun but have heard they are buckers. I'm trying to figure out what breeding to look for in a mare to cross with my racebred stud. I think he would cross really well on a cowbred mare. So I want bloodlines known for being good cowhorses and barrel horses, trainability, personality, etc. Thanks. |

Location: Wonderful Wyoming | A full brother to A Classic Dash. Nice. Colonel Freckles and Playgun. You can never go wrong. After riding some of the nicest bloodlines in the cutting business, those 2 are my favorites as well as Smart Chic Olena. I'm actually a fan of the race lines myself and don't like to cross on cow BUT after riding a few Smart Chic mares, I told my husband I would love to have been able to cross a Smart Chic mare that was out of a Colonel Freckles daughter (one of his best crosses) back to First Down Dash himself. That would have been a heck of a baby!!! |

Β There was a grandson of Playgun that ran in the futurities around here last year that was so nice. My stud has been crossed on daughters of Frenchmans Guy and Captain Biankus and I really like those crossed on him. I've always loved the cow/run cross so just trying to decide which bloodlines to seek out. |

| Docs Prescription is one of my favorite bloodlines. I also like Peppy San Badger, they can be pissy and many believe them to be buckers but I've never had that issue but they are sassy. Freckles Playboy also produces some really gritty horses. |

I personally don't think you can go wrong with proven Doc Bar bloodlines though, they are technically speed bred.
We've also had a couple of Peppy San Badger horses and they were are not buckers........they are workers

| The Peppy San Badgers that I have had have never been anything but honest and willing and holy cow can those suckers turn! Too fast for me sometimes.
That and while not strictly "cow bred," Miss n Cash foals are fabulous for both barrels and cows. http://missncash.com/missncash.htm

Location: GA | With all of the suggestions of Peppy San Badger, take a look at the horses being ridden by the great competitors and breeders of the Fulton family. You'll find several are sired by son of Peppy San Badger, Paddys Irish Whiskey. Lisa Fulton is a super nice lady and told me the cross of A Streak Of Fling on their daughters of Paddys Irish Whiskey is one of their favorites. I wish I had taken a photo of the pages of the Fulton's sale catalog that featured their sons and their personal horses (almost every one had Paddy or Irish or Whiskey in it's name LOL)
Definitely check out both the Fulton's and the Myers' (owners of Frenchmans Guy) broodmare programs on their websites. You'll see the name Paddys Irish Whiskey several times.
There is a super nice futurity colt for sale here on BHW that recently set an arena record that is sired by A Streak Of Fling and out of a daughter of Paddys Irish Whiskey.
If you click on the ad link in my signature, the fourth picture in the ad is a 2 month old filly by our son of Paddys Irish Whiskey out of a Panther Mountain/First Down Dash mare.
I love cow breds and am excited to hear of your interest in crossing your stallion on some of this blood! |

Ditto on the PSB. I love my "pissy litle bucker" he is Mr. Personality. Very trainable and athletic. |

I have an own son of Paddys Irish Whiskey out of a daughter of Tanguery Gin, he is four, been rode about 30 days. Hasnt bucked other than the first saddling and that was minor. he is super soft, athletic and learns quick. he is a bit on the lazy side. Very, very laid back. Nothing bothers him at all. I just started hauling him to see the sights and nothing has ruffled his feathers yet. Ive been riding him in the warm up areas and even horses running all directions hasnt phased him. I have to say though, he has the biggest hiney ive ever seen on a cutter!!!

| I agree with what the others have said. Some of my favorite "cow" lines include Docs Stylish Oak, and Smart Chic Olena. I have not seen a Playgun yet that I didnt like, but dont have much personal experience with them. I know a couple people who have had luck on the barrels with Highbrow Cat horses as well. I have seen some Hancocks that were pretty speedy as well and made good barrel horses. We have to remember that all the cow lines came from the foundation lines, and most all of them were runners. |

Another horse off the 6666 that I love is Sixes Pick. He is an athlete!! I had a choice on a Sixes Pick or my colt but that particular colt just didnt have the disposition that I wanted. I also love Tanguery Gin bred horses. Every horse I own some how goes back to Ed Echols in their pedigree. |

Location: Wonderful Wyoming | yes :) The ones we enjoyed the most were anything Smart Little Lena, just watch for them to have decent bone as most were very tiny. Somebody Smart sired a favorite filly I rode. Liked anything that went back to Smart Chic Olena except Chics Achey Breaky. They had some attitude and bronc in them. Highbrow Cats were smart and pretty easy. Freckles Playboy, easy as well. Ran as fast as we could from anything Duel Pep. Gallo Del Cielo's were on the hot blooded side. Anything with the name Merada were much loved. Master Merada, Freckles Merada etc. Hollywood Dun Its were small but pretty easy to train.
These are ones we rode enough of that we could actually form an honest opinion about them and their sire lines. |
