| Sorry on a roll today and is a little long... But is it selfish of me to keep Floyd? I need ya'll to tell me to keep him, worry about the box when the time comes.
When I was 23 I was busy (school and work) and got rid of my horses, 3 months later a NON-horsey friend told me she was going to buy me a horse cuz she doesn't like me now. She said "You are such a bitch, you get a horse or we're not friends anymore." (I got a horse and have not been without one to ride since.)
I am about to the point of maybe living in a box. (won't really be in a box but is that bad) Social security is taking forever to answer my disability claim, and my place of employment basically (long story) forced me to quit when I filed a workers comp claim on them 3 years ago. Needless to say I'm not in a good place finacially, the only debt I have is the house payment and it is NOT past due, I watch free TV with the converter box... I was told by 3 different realestate people I won't get what I owe on my place if I sold it. So I'm doing everything I can to hold onto it.
If I had read these things on someone elses post my first thought would be to get rid of some THINGs.
I've told people my whole life that if you can't afford the horse it's not fair to keep them. Right now Floyd isn't really costing anything to keep him. He's on grass and I keep patching his fly sheet. But if it came to needing a vet I really couldn't pay to take him.. I thank GOD every day that Floyd has been such a healthy boy. ( other than is allergy to the no see-ums and crappy hooves)
My farrier has been doing his feet in exchange for me helping her catch ponies at one of her clients so his feet aren't being neglected.
The last couple weeks I've been thinking maybe he should go to a little girl to love.
Floyd is really the only thing I splurge on for myself. I'm not sure I'd survive NOT having him here even if I can't ride much, some days he's the only thing that holds me together.
A short little run down: When I still had money but decided I was going to cut back on the number of horses, FLOYD is the one I kept. (even tho originally he's the one I didn't want to buy) My ex didn't pay any child support (most of you know my ex and I have a brother sister type relationship) while I raised our boys, so he is the one that pays for my phone, internet and buys some grocerys. I figure he can pay for some of my stuff now. At the time I felt I'd rather the boys spend time with their father than send him to jail for non-payment.
Side note: I do have ACE and Axel here I call them mine but their financial upkeep are not mine and their owners pay for Floyd's shots.

| Others may disagree, but I really think you should keep him. Your mental health is just about as important as anything else! Could you do a onsite lease to someone and that money you make from the lease be put into a account for vet bills and things?
Edited because I can't spell!

I actually was thinking along these lines... I may bring it up at the next RUC meeting. Maybe there is a young person that would come to ride here... Of course if I did a lease thing some of the injury responsibility would be relieved. and I'd get a contract written up. |

Better watch out!!! You're not that far from me... You may see me and Floyd riding down the turnpike, with my little cowpoodle.

Location: USA | You can't give up everything! You've got to hold onto to at least one thing that keeps you sane and happy. Otherwise, depression and who knows what else could set in. He's part of who YOU ARE. If you get rid of him, you may have a loss of self identity. Don't lose you! Now that's said, you're keeping him! Sounds like you're doing everything you can financially and have some sweet deals worked out for his feet, etc..It could be a struggle should an emergency happen but emergencies are never convenient, even to those with money. Like the other poster said, should something like that happen, come here and tell us and if we can, we will help. |

| Keep Floyd and worry about the box when the time comes. It sounds like you are taking good care of him and are sound enough to determine when you can no longer care for him. May the Lord give you the miracle you are needing right now! |

Location: N Texas | While I do think it's important to be able to pay for vet stuff, I know plenty of horses that never get any maintenance whatsoever...we're talking no worming, no farrier, no shots--NOTHING except pasture/hay and water.
I get the feeling that if you sell Floyd you'll get very depressed, and depression meds cost money, so you may as well put that money towards caring for Floyd :)
I'm vaguely familiar with your health situation, but is there ANYTHING you can do to bring in some extra money, or anywhere you can work part time?
Oh BTW, I'm on the side of you keeping Floyd :) |

They make us smile and listen to us and nurture us with unconditional love.....well except for Richard and he nurtures/tortures me with unconditional trials, but I love him nontheless. So without question, keep Floyd! |

Location: Texas | I vote KEEP Floyd for as long as you can. As far as ways to help keep afloat. Have you thought of renting a room in your house? I have a friend that I rented a room from many years ago and it worked out great for both of us. |

That is exactly what I am trying to do right now... I have a few ads out. I even put something on here not too long ago... I have had a few calls, so far no lookers. |

I don't believe it's just mental health either... I've always said one should never underestimate the healing power of horses... I would not be surprised if he has helped you along your current path more than you know. I vote you keep the Cookie Monster.. |

Location: In a happy place | I vote to keep Floyd. I don't see you doing well if you get rid of your one thing that keeps you sane. I bought my colt back a few months ago after saying I wasn't going to have another horse after losing my stud. I don't think I would be here today if I had not gotten my Gator horse. He gave me a reason to walk out of the house. I am sure there are enough of us here that will help however we are possible if you get in a bind. I think you have done wonderful with everything you have been through this last year to keep it together like you have. Your journey has not been an easy one and I think you need Floyd to help keep you together.

If I feel crappy or blue, equine therapy either cures me or at least makes me feel a lot better. Floyd is good for your health, maybe including your physical health. Think about that. |
