Location: Montana | Not trying to be controversial, or raise up any issues, I was just curious how much hay cost in your area. Feel free to add by the bale if you want, I mostly try to purchase by the ton unless I just need a quick couple of bales for something. |

Location: North Dakota | Feel pretty fortunate this year since the haying weather has been WET, have some nice alfalfa/grass hay mix (35% alfalfa) put up dry for $55 per bale ($85 per ton)Β seems like a lot for our area but there is very few bales of good hay put up around here-most of it looks like tobacco!Β Central North Dakota. Small squares of second cutting alfalfa bought from a friend $4.25 per 50 pound bale-I feel like I robbed him!!

Location: Montana | This is the first year I've bought small bales, and overall they cost more, but love the ease and less waste with them. In my area we've had good rain this year, but it seems like I'm seeing a lot more moldy hay, so have to be pretty careful to get good stuff. |

Location: Online | Too damned much. Between the dairies paying the hay farmer's greedy, inflated prices and most everyone lost their 3rd crop, we were lucky to get ours at $200 per ton. The price is only going to go up, it never comes back down. |

| We grow alfalfa, and prices have actually gotten a little softer this year. We finally got some rain and there was a lot more hay in the area. From the hay report for August 19th in southwest Kansas: alfalfa larger squares horse quality $250-300 per ton, small squares $10 per bale. Supreme dairy alfalfa $230-$260; premium alfalfa $205-$230; dry cow, good $170-$200.
Not to start an argument, but as a hay farmer it frustrates me when people call me greedy. If you knew the expenses to raise a hay crop you might think twice about calling me that. We only have half a circle, which is 60 acres. Before the first cutting we had around $8,000 into spray and fertilizer. Then we have gas expenses for running our sprinkler, plus the cost of swathing and baling. We pay a custom hay company to do this for us because we don't have enough to justify owning our own equipment. That costs is between $2,500-$3,000 per cutting depending on how it is put up, large or small squares or larger rounds.
Sorry for my rant, I'll get off my soapbox! I just wanted to point out some of the expenses that go into that bale of hay. |

Location: CA | In my area, N Cal, I pay about $20 a bale for a 100lb bale of alfalfa at the local feed store. If you're lucky, you can find it for a couple bucks less from a local grower. |

Location: Texas | We grow a Jiggs/Gordo Bluestem mix in one field and a mixture of common bermuda, giant bermuda, and gordo bluestem in a second field.
Both fields sell the same. Last year we sold out our hay barn with $6/ 60 lb square bales. This year we started out at $6 a bale but have had so much rain we've had to drop our price to $5 a bale and we have plenty in the barn⦠not sure how we will fit the last cutting in. |

Location: 31 lengths farms | We found Beardless wheat, my mare can't have alfalfa and grass hay is about none existent here with the cattlemen buying it ahead of bringing the cows home from summer pasture and us getting no rain for pastures. We jumped on it, have fed Wheat in the past also and got it delivered for 9.50 a bale for 120 bales, they are 110 lb bales. Alfalfa here for the same size bales was around 16 a bale and grass hay if you could find it was 17 a bale, 22 at the feed stores.... |

Location: In the land of peanuts and cotton | Are we talking about round bales or squaire bales? We have aprox. 40acres of hay fields. Our squaire bales sell for $5 round bales for $35. We could make them higher because there's not many places to get hay but we don't want to make people pay more. All ours is weed and chemical free. |

I'll never call anyone greedy who is growing and cutting hay. I don't see how you can make it work!! I pay well over $300 a ton for the alfalfa I get, and close to that for my timothy/orchard (and maybe 5% alfalfa) mix. The alfalfa I pay almost the same per bale for transportation across the country, the grass hay I don't squabble cause my hay guy is good to me and always saves a shipment for January/February delivery, even in lean hay years. |

Location: Montana | Β It can be either round bale or square bale. For good grass hay here the price start between $5 & $6 a bale...about 60# bales. For a good grass alfalfa mix (60/40 or 50/50, which is what I try to find) starts around $7 a bale that is between 60# & 70#. I'm not complaining, I just thought it would be interesting to see how the rest of the country prices their hay. |
