This is going to ramble a bit (sorry!). Anyways, I decided to experiment, and with a little slip on Sunday (hamburger bun, at ANHA, starvation was imminent) I've gone completely flour free for almost an entire week. If it's got flour in it of any kind, I'm not having it.

I'm currently experiencing low carb flu (Google, it's real!), though I feel really good overall, been eating everything else as normal (meats, cheese, veggies, salad dressing, yes haven't quit chocolate), increased my fruit consumption though (have to eat something!). Do you realize how many things are made with flour/wheat?! Omg this has brought my grocery bill to half! I'm going to look at myself again in 30 days...

Today, I bought the book Wheat Belly, as it talks about my current experiment. I love it, it's mostly research through history and scientific analysis of humans and their interaction with wheat. Read it, I dare you!!!

Also, I dropped 6 lbs since last Friday. I haven't gained or lost weight within a few lbs in 7 years. I'm missing an inch off my belly and an inch off my butt (what?! how?!!)

Has anyone else done this? How'd it go?

I believe it! I was infected with a bacteria called campylobacter! Holy SNOT I was sick for over a month with all the flu like symptoms plus severe stomach and intestinal cramping that were completely debilitating at times. I thought for sure I must have a sudden onset of some gluten allergy.

so i cut it all out immediately. on top of losing 15 pounds when I was sick. In the month of August I lost another 10 lbs just cutting out grains... and beer :(. It made me realize how much I really eat in grains! and I feel GREAT! Of course I can eat it now, and do on occasion but I feel really awesome not eating it!

I read Wheat Belly about 3 weeks ago, and as of today I'm 16 days gluten free! I can definitely feel a difference! I cheated one day when I went out to dinner with some girlfriends about 10 days in and I had an instant headache. It's definitely a lot harder to go shopping and plan meals, but it's been worth it. I'm sort of stuck in a rut on foods I eat now, need to start looking up some more gluten free recipes to try so I don't wear myself out on certain foods.
Have been wanting to try gluten-free for a long time, Wheat Belly finally gave me the motivation.

If you're eating fruits and veggies and beans and nuts, how do you have low carb flu?

Because the bulk of my diet was based on flour based, high sugar foods. Bread and pasta and cereal and such. My digestive system is in uproar....no 'normal' levels of goodies for the digestive bugs...hence the 'flu' symptoms. Details get technical real quick!!!!

Edited to add about details for three for luck. :)

Ah, I see. When my son was diagnosed with Reactive Hypoglycemia last year, we had to abrubtly modify his diet. It took a while to get the carb balance right and figure out what he could tolerate--low carb absolutely didn't work.  We aren't grain-free, but he does better with quinoa, brown and wild rice and old fashioned oats than with wheat and such.

For me, this was more of a "I'm kind of bored, I should be healthier, I feel bad for not working out as much, I'm going to tinker with my food intake and see how I feel." I know I can't do low carb, I go all shaky and I'm SO hungry! But just by cutting out flour based anything has spun me in a whole new direction! I'm not hungry, I'm still eating lots, but I'm eating differently. My BMI has always teetered around 25, I'm interested to see what happens in 30 days. I have become my own dry lotted pony project...

Idk why, but that just gave me the giggles. Maybe I should try this...I was on Medifast and lost like 50lbs but I took a break because I need that money for a new saddle. For every article I read saying how bad gluten is for you, there's another article that says it's not bad so I never know what to believe. I do know I need to lose 80-100lbs though.

I have a friend who used to eat that way. She would swear that she would blow up like a balloon whenever she ate any sort of bread or grain items. I may have to give it a try I need to lose about 30lbs or more.

I accidently started eating grilled chicken i have a grill and grilled meates and veggies. Read about wheat belly. Cut out bread i used to eat 2 pieces of toast for breakfast to take some pills. Now i eat a 2 egg omlet. I did not loose anyweight but i have low thryoid even with my meds so i will not lose weight.. When i went on low carb i starved for about 6 weeks until my body adjusted. Not i am not hungrey as i eat protein i never an never starving anymore i love pizza dont have craving anymore. Went to a 4 day show i have several ladies we all bring food, no one else is low carb, geuten free. So i kinda went of my diet, well going to number 2 was a problem when i eat bread. I just wish so much stuff you can get at restraunts has gleuten in it but at waffle house you can get eggs and meat and do all right. I did eat a couple of wraps with taco meat and veggies. When i got home i was really glad. There is a delli close by at lunch i get some chicken salad in a container eat it straight it is good fill me up and is hime made no,gleuten. They also make tuna salad. also do eggs and becon and 1 piece of gleuten free bread. There are some types of gleuten free pasta which helps with salad issues.

OMG! Umm, well. Fruit for breakfast, as soon as I wake up. Think watermelon, peaches, etc. Follow with a boiled egg and a piece of string cheese for a snack. Then lunch, just some lunch meat, another string cheese, another piece of fruit and maybe some variety of vegetable, like sugar snap peas or a bell pepper. Dinner is a piece of meat grilled the size of my hand, and as many vegetables as I can stuff. Absolutely everything BUT something made with flour of ANY kind. Just a fun experiment for 30 days, I haven't been paying attention to calories, just staying away from flour.

I walked into a gas station the other day starving, and came out with a Diet Coke, a pack of gum, a 3 Musketeers, and a piece of jerky. Breakfast this morning was a peach and two pieces of string cheese. (Note on the peach focus, I love them, they're almost out of season. I intend to eat them all.) Lunch was lunch meat with mayo and seasoning, not wrapped in anything, but then I'm odd, doesn't phase me. A snack was 1/3 cup tapioca pudding and then later another peach.

No exercise, other than taking care of and riding three horses on the road all weekend and at home through the week.

There's some good ideas in Wheat Belly that I'll be incorporating this week that I just read about today. I've got my husband on board, we went to the grocery store tonight and stocked up on nuts, fruits, veggies and fresh meat.

I'm a Diet Coke addict. I'm going to stop. Someday. But not today. Or probably tomorrow. Maybe the same time I give up air. Yes, I know it's absolutely horrible for you! But they put something in it, and I love it.

I've always tried to never eat later than 7 pm.

I think everyone should try this, just to see what happens. You'll know in 30 days if it's something you should keep up. Probably less than that. :)

Can you please keep us updated on your progress with this.  I do believe there is something to it.  I bought the book last winter and skimmed through it.  I must admit I kind was overwhelmed as my take from skimming it was that you had to go total wheat free meaning absolutely nothing with wheat in it.  No dressings, condiments (like ketchup, barbeque sauce, etc.)

I did cut back though on bread, pasta etc. and admit I did feel better but my busy life and cooking for family got in way and I slipped. With that being said I do know if I o.d. on bread I feel horrible.  I made a bunch of homemade raspberrie jam a couple weeks ago and so of course ate a bunch of toast everyday for days with my homemade jam (it was so yummy) but man did I get bloated and felt horrible.  I tried to cut back again this last week and feel some better.

I do honestly believe there is something to this.  It seems the more bread/pasta I eat the more I crave it.

So are you more or less just cutting out the obvious like bread and pasta but not going as strict as the total wheat belly by also cutting out absolutely everything including condiments, etc.?

I'm really interested in hearing about your progress and what you are eating and not eating and how strict you stay on it.  Although I could loose 10lbs I'm more interested in feeling better.  I seem so tired and drained all the time.  I'm thinking my diet has something to do with it even though I eat reasonably well.

Oh and I have a coke zero addiction so I understand.

Yep, same here!!!

I started by reading Wheat Belly; and stuck to the outline of allowed foods for a month, and I mean, I *REALLY* stuck with it.

I lost 12 pounds in a month without doing anything else - I didn't even add exercise. Just changed my diet. I felt so much better! Also, I had been tested for Celiac, and the doctor told me "it's negative" - well, during my month of experimentation, my acid reflux that was so bad I was on 40 mg of Prilosec twice a day, went away, completely went away, without medication, even when I consumed tomato sauce (on my spaghetti squash "pasta") and red wine, and coffee. No acid reflux and I was able to get off my medication for it!

I did fall off the wagon between Christmas and New Year's last year, and have climbed back on a few times. I need to get back to it because I gained about 5 lbs back.

I highly suggest reading Grain Brain as well; and there are a few groups on Facebook that are helpful. Wheat Belly is one, and "Low Carb High Fat" is another.

For me, I don't sweat the small stuff. The "die hards" will yell at you for eating HFCS, or something with higher carbs. For me, the issue was gluten itself. That being said, I do try to be mindful of what I'm eating in terms of carbs, I just don't have a meltdown if I eat a sweet potato a few nights a week, where the extreme followers would yell at you because sweet potato should be eaten in moderation on a low carb diet.

A sample for me would look something like -

When I first wake up: bullet proof coffee (coffee, butter, coconut oil, heavy cream, blended to frothy goodness using immersion blender), and then when I get to work (around 8 AM), I would cook bacon in the microwave, and eat that with an avocado with salt and pepper; sometimes I will have an apple with cheese slices or an apple with peanut butter or almond butter; on the weekends when I can cook, I will make an omelette full of meat and cheese.

Lunch - usually late because I'm still full from ^ I might have leftovers from the night before - meat and vegetables - steak/chicken/fish, sweet potato with seasonings, brussel sprouts, zucchini, yellow squash

Dinner - I find a lot of Paleo recipes that I like at paleomg.com Paleo doesn't take issue with "natural carbs" like honey, starchy vegetables, etc as much as the low carb high fat people do, and there are A LOT of recipes on that site that are SOOO GOOD! I've tried probably 50+ of them and have loved every single one.

Snacks - nuts (again, LCHF and the WB folks will say "limit nuts, no peanuts, etc) but for me, they are gluten free, so I eat them.

I do not make my own condiments - I will use store bought ketchup, mayo, mustard, etc. I do make sure if I buy condiments or dressings that they are gluten free because my issue is with the gluten. If I can find gluten free that is also low in sugar, I will pick that over a gluten free that is full of sugar.

Basically - fats and proteins and limited starches

It's really not that hard once you get the hang of it.

I have been experimenting with spicy guacamole or salsa on chicken salads instead of actual dressing. And if I eat fries (I know horrible, but so good) instead of ketchup I will melt cheese over them.  :)
