My mare came up lame last week and I hauled her to the vet Friday. They told me that she has bilateral hind leg suspensory injuries. Her left is much worse than the right. They told me that the swelling wasn't all that bad and gave me the options of stall rest, injections, shockwave therapy or surgery. She has been on stall rest ever since and I have been icing her legs twice a day. I would like to get some input from people who have gone through this before.

Did the vet say if prp is an option? My gelding has some sdft and sl issues on his front left. We are trying the prp treatment.

I'm not sure how severe her injuries are, but several people suggested BOT boots and PHT magnetic tendon wraps to me when my horse had a suspensory injury so you might could try that in addition to icing.

I did PRP with my mare's suspensory injury. I also did a sweat wrap with Runners Relief for 8 weeks. I would alternate between that and a clay poultice on her leg. After I would rinse all that off I would put PHT wraps on her leg and then rewrap or repoultice. It took 5 months and she was lame for a long time. I was scared she would not come back, but she did. They told me I would have her back in 5-6 months and I did… but in hindsight I would have done things differently and given her a lot more time off. She ended up getting the year off when I bred her, and I think that was the best thing for her.

With my mares suspensory issue I used ice 2X a day while I did chores in the barn then at night I would Ice Tight & standing wrap her legs and during the day she wore BOT quick wraps. Sucky part is they have to stay up in a stall 24/7. I also put her on 1g bute for 5 days to try to help get ahead of the swelling. She was down a month & half. She is also on THE Nutrawound that helps with healing so that had a part in it to I'm sure but she lives on it.

THE NutraWOUND works AMAZING! I have used it on a few of my horses for tears and ligament injuries. Worth every penny. I also use BOT.

My horse is currently in his 5th month of recovery from an avulsion fracture of his left front suspensory. My vet is a very good performance vet and as she tells me, the number of letters in the word is the number of months recovery. So ligament=8, Tendon=6, etc .....The one thing I will say, is do NOT rush the recovery. I did the stall rest, shockwave and PHT quick wrap boots. I am now riding him every day and increasing his speed and time each week to strengthen the ligament. We just had an ultrasound done two weeks ago and everything is looking great. Do what you can to insure proper healing but don't rush the recovery. Make sure the ligament is strong and once cleared to ride, bring him back slowly. Good luck!

I have used generic stem cells with great results the bottle costs 200. Mine had minor tears in her leg, after 6 weeks I was able to start leggin her back up, no scar tissue seen on ultrasound.

As how bot works on injuries

Especially in legs, there is a poor circulation system especially if there is any swelling.

What bot does is reflects heat causing vasodilation. The damaged tissue has released a hormone can't remember which one that will attract white blood cells, and platelets to remove the damaged tissue and begin the regeneration. With the vasodilation this allows this to happen faster. Heat also relaxes the muscles and tendons to prevent more tearing from occurring.

The biggest thing to remember is ice for acute injuries to reduce inflammation, once the initial swelling is gone, you can switch to heat.

Stem cell and intensive stall rest. I did stem cell on my mare and she came back sound, along with 14 months off the pattern (because I'm a sissy).

Also Runners Relief and game ready. Swimming for the rest of the body.

Some do shockwave with good results, I think it depends on the severity and type of stem cell injury.

ALSO: This is a MUST:

Get to a good farrier. I mean I'm talking an honest to God, certified, qualified, OLD guy, preferably one that attends vet conferences and clinics and keeps LEARNING. One that can draw you the inside, outside, of the foot. One that demands to see xrays. A real one. I'm willing to bet money that your horse's angles are off. You shouldn't be getting suspensory injuries unless the foot angles are out of whack or you seriously overloaded an unfit horse in deep, deep ground.

NOVOBRACE!!!! My mother's 18 year old barrel horse shredded his suspensory. On the ultrasound it looked like swiss cheese, 3 months second ultrasound it looked like a ligament again. One small hole remained, but the others healed. It is an internal brace. The vet injects it using an ultrasound. The brace begins to form within 3 hours of injection. She may be able to run him again. We're waiting to see how he tolerates exercise. He doesn't limp and the leg is back to normal size. AMAZING product!!

I agree, I can't figure out how adding heat to a horses leg is helpful?

OP, Shockwave has shown to be very effective for horses who have strained susp and is pretty cheap.  IRAP is also a good option too, but usually runs about $1500.

Catching this types of injury early is key!

Ice! Ice! Ice! 2-3 times a day for the first 15-30 days. After you are done icing, message the tendons with your hand for 5-10 minutes to get the blood flow moving again.

Surpass after icing along with Sore no More clay poultice with loosely wrapped saran wrap and standing wraps on top to keep the tendon tight and draw the swelling out.

Then alternate between DMSO and Sore no More clay poultice with loosely wrapped saran wrap with standing wraps on top for the next 30-45 days. Other poultices work as well. I recommend using a diluted DMSO mix and not the 100% stuff so you don't burn them.

After 20-30 days, depending on the severity of the injury, I actually get them out to hand walk and work up to 10-15 minutes a day. I think that movement helps keep the tendon from developing scar tissue - JMO and you should consult your vet on this.

After 45 days reevaluate and hope for the best! Good luck and hope she comes back even better!
