That's better than pulling out the opposite side!  When you doing circles put you hands where you want in a turn.  Repetition is what will make it happen!  Oh I'm a hip puller also lol.

I do - I keep my hands up in front of the horn, with my inside hand slightly lifted. But head me toward a barrel, and everything goes right back to my hip...

I dont think it is a bad thing, here is some great advice from top trainer - Danyelle Campbell (if the link doesnt work google Danyelle and pulling to the hip)

I was taught to pull towards my hip in a turn. However, I find myself lifting a little instead of straight to the hip. I'm kinda like Ricky Bobby lol.

Another thing you can do is to do slow work and keep physically telling yourself "hand out, hand out". That helped me when I was trying to reteach myself!

OOOOO KAY...so lifting is interestingly enough not the way to get smooth turns out of my gelding...

I read the article mentioned above, and this hits close to home now:

First, trot around lifting up on the rein. Pay very close attention to how your horse is moving his feet. How soft and relaxed does your horse feel throughout his body? Is he supple? Are all four feet moving the same speed or do you feel he is taking choppy steps with his front feet and not reaching? (NOTE: it is very important for your horse to reach with his front end throughout your turn.)

and was proved to me yesterday when I *REALLY* focused on lifting instead of hip-pulling.

Our turns were choppy and I felt like he was dying down and losing forward motion.

Granted, he has about 90 days on the pattern, but we are loping the pattern and yesterday, our turns felt awful. I felt like he was TRYING to get the turn completed, but that my lifting was holding him back. Like, he wanted to go, but couldn't go.

So, I guess I'll have to experiment with what works for us, but I don't think lifting will be it.

I usually panic somewhere after the first barrel and start the pull method... :-(

I thought you were supposed to pull towards your hip? At least that's how I was taught. Pulling up or out doesn't make sense to me. Especially with the overly long reins most people run with. I keep my reins super short. Works well for me.

See, these replies are interesting to me...

Everyone around here is always yelling "LIFT!" at their friends who are running. When I see pics of me with my hands to my hip, everyone says "you need to lift, stop pulling to your hip!"

Either way, lifting didn't work well for us, so we're back to how I naturally ride (to my hip) unless and until I find something that works better. That's worked the best so far! LOL!

Focus focus focus.

Perfect slow work.

I'm working to fix the same issue. I rode with Ed wright in July and the difference in my turns when I lift instead of pull is substantial. The muscle memory is just getting to the point where I can do it in a competitive run.

If you open the pic on my post the difference between lifting your hand, not pulling up, and then pulling back...granted it is not to my hip...might have been better if I had pulled to my hip is amazing. In the lower pic you can see we kept forward motion in the turn, in the other pic you see him bracing against me defending himself. Lifting isn't about pulling, its about guiding and keeping everything going forward in the turn. Sit in your chair and pull to your hip....you are in fact pulling back are you not?

Honestly, I think it all depends on the individual. My little mare, I pull to the hip. Big mare needs lift.

Doesn't it matter what bit you are using???

Some bits are designed to use the inside rein in an more upward or lifted manner - some are designed to be pulled to the hip or even in an outward motion (the triangle theory).

Just thinking here ...

Yes, that too. Pretzel is definitely for the more upward lifting hand.
