I have a 7 year old mare. I just broke her this year, but she is already off to a great start-won both her times out, already won about $100 from one show and the other was a local ribbon deal. Now, she was GIVEN to me. However, she was not broke and she was still with her dam. Crazy, I know.
APHA mare, 14.3 hands. 1100 pounds.
Lets say the horse ends up being a pretty solid horse (lets go for bottom 2D/top 3D at 300+ entries). She is my ONLY horse.
She stays barefoot. Is an easy keeper. I feed her a local feed company 14/8 pellet, along with electrolytes and Exceed 6 way. Only goes to vet to get shots, coggins, and dental.
Is it worth getting insurance on a horse like this?

Trust me, no feelings hurt here. I am a broke school teacher. Just want to know if it is worth my time to insure a horse like this, or just leave it be? Part of me says leave it alone because she is a mare. The other says I will have to take out a loan to purchase another horse.

What do you guys do?

I am in insurance. Not horse insurance.

What my boss always says to people who ask if something is worth insuring - buy as much insurance as you can afford.

Simple and to the point.

Insure her for what you think she is worth. My insurance company automatically insures my horses up to $5,000 through homeowners. BUT>......the horse can only die of certain causes (lightning, drown, gun shot, etc.
