I saw on FB where bad ground was being discussed and someone mentioned a horse dying because of injury sustained at the Pendleton Round Up this weekend. I couldn't find anything else on it. Anyone have more info?

I saw that Trisha Wirth's horse was laid to rest following an accident. She has a broken arm and will be seeing doctors when she gets back to Ca.

This is awful and I can't even imagine the pain and broken heart she must be dealing with.
Many prayers for her quick healing.

We watched the run and they fell at the end of the run not during.  It looked like as they pulled up down at the end of the dirt track, her horse slipped and went down on his left hip.  She went off.  The rodeo committee quickly pulled a horse trailer into the arena and carefully loaded him and left.  It is so sad to learn that he was not saved.

I hate to say that is a part of rodeo, they dont work the ground, and if you enter you know what you are running on. If some of the contestants would boycott then they would try to,fix the ground. But those who keep entering and they continue make money youmwill never make then fix it.. Let a big barrel race producer have groind like that see how much flack you would here. I was just a colonial nbha show. The horse center had added some new ground and they get the ground fast, but consistant horses did not fall, just never great, would get deep and rutted out, but nothing really bad but not good and fast.

Was this horse's injury due to ground conditions?  Pendleton is tricky and everyone knows that due to the distance, grass, and track.   I don't know what the dirt is like there or how it is worked.  I only know what little bit I've watched on tv over the years.

Sorry about the horse.

Were you there?  How can you say it was the ground?  It seems to me it was a horse just taking a bad step when stopping at the end of a run,  It could have happened to any of us.  Please don't assume it was about the ground and spread rumours.  I know Trish and she is devastated, not to mention injured.

I'm all for improving ground conditions at rodeos....but from what seems to have happened... it wasn't the ground.  Horse just took a bad step stopping.  It could happen to anyone.  I'm so sorry for her loss, not all accidents are avoidable.

The arena is tricky... I dont think anyone can "blame" that arena because its kinda the risk you take. How many discussions have we had about shoes and techniques to run there? A lot. Rodeo isnt known for great ground and thats what makes those horse so great, they can run on anything. You give my horse hard ground and he will not participate lol. He doesnt run at rodeos ha.

Prayers to the family who lost their beloved mount that day... its so devastating.

I am very sorry for the loss of the horse. But I know the ground is an issue regardless if it was in this case or not.. My friends team roped there and shared that, and I know a person that roped there and broke his leg (later passed away) the safety aspect of running on grass and dirt =not safe. However, I agree with if you enter up then yes you take that chance unfortunately.  Again, very sorry for the loss, but I can assure you the "rumors" of bad ground have nothing to do with this accident.

From what I read, I don't think you can blame the ground for this accident.
Unfortunately this things happen. I was there the day Dial A Red Rooster broke his leg, he did it in the alleyway on his way to the first barrel.

Anyway, truly heartbreaking for his owners. Prayers to them.

Β You can't compare the roping events there to the barrels. It's apples and oranges. Ropers are on the grass and grass can be very slick. They are well aware of this when they enter. Barrels are on the dirt as far as the turns go. Yes, it can be tricky. Especially if you rate on the grass. Again, the barrel racers are well aware of this when they enter. There will always be a freak type accident even if conditions are perfect. Look at Dial A Red Rooster.

The Pendleton Round Up is 104 years going. Grass has been there for most of it. EVERYONE knows that when they enter. It isn't going to change. Some barrel chick was on FB, yelling that they should tear out the grass. Really? It is a football field for the high school. Pendleton is big on tradition. They will keep the grass and get rid of the barrel race. You enter at your own risk.

I'm sorry about Trish's horse! But it doesn't sound like it was really an issue of the grass... I've seen a horse break 2 legs running barrels at a PRCA/WPRA rodeo. The ground was not bad. But the horse was not built for running barrels and should never been there in the first place. It was a very fine-boned Arabian. THAT was bad all the way around, because this particular committee wasn't prepared for injured animals like Pendleton is.

IMHO you could wrap a horse in bubble wrap and the worst can still happen.  I have seen a horse WALKING in a warm up pen, hang a toe and break a leg.  Had one of my own land funny after jumping and kicking on the walker and compound fracture at the hock.  Chit happens in the best and worst or circumstances -- who can say why.
