I'm looking to get a big bale net for my horses. I've never used them before, but I only have ton bales now and they are getting hard to feed. Anyone have any suggestions?

Cinch Chix! Their Large bale net will fit over a 4x4x8 bale. I just use a come along to get the bale out of the truck bed. It lands on the end and I climb up put the net on and then push over and cinch it up. My horses look better and don't waste any hay. The process sounds easy but it can get a bit tricky getting the bale to land without the net creeping up. Having a tractor would make it way easier or probably a tow strap would help to life the bale like they show on their website!

I love the Cinch Chix net too! We use a tractor or a truck with a bale bed, and they are fairly simple to get on the bale. My husband is able to get them a lot tighter than if it's just me putting it on, but you can always tighten it down a bit once the bale has been ate down some. I think my net paid for itself in the first few bales!

That's the one I've been looking at. My horses are at the dairy so I have a big loader so that shouldn't be a problem. I was looking at the hole sizes and wanted to get the 11/4 but a lot higher priced then the others. What size do you guys have?

I got the 1 1/4 for grass hay and so far I am happy with it. In the winter I might changes to the bigger one so they can get more feed. Just don't freak out if they seem to be not getting enough to eat at first. Give them a chance to figure it out.

I have the largest net from Cinch Chix and it DOES NOT fit the bales we have right now which weigh about 1200 lbs and measure 6-6 1/2' at their widest side. I had to order a larger net from a place in Canada, www.slowfeeder.com. I'm anxiously awaiting it's arrival! It is interesting how different people define a "big" bale.

Bump for anyone else wanting to weight in. Still on the fence about spending $250 on the net and need some more encouragement :

I would be worried about the horses getting their feet / shoes caught up in the netting.

Very good to know! Some of ours are right at 1100lbs.

I just bought one and havn't gotten to use it yet, but I think they say if your horses have shoes you should put it in a hay ring.

^Yes.
Barefoot are fine with the small hole nets.
If your horse has shoes, the netted bale should also be inside a hay ring to prevent the heel of the shoe from grabbing onto the net.

@ two burke boys - please let me know how the nets from Canada work out for you - our bales are all over 1200 lbs and none of the nets I found fit them so tried using two on a bale - worked great but was very time consuming. I did that for several months and was very pleased with the results. NO hay waste and the horses did great. After the time change did not have time in the evenings to mess with putting one net on bottom and one on top then lacing the two together but would not hesitate spending another 250.00 for nets that fit. I know they would pay for themselves
